Would a SEI SOCOM Gas Plug work in Norinco Shorty?

Hey all,

Picked up one of the Canada Ammo Norinco 18.5 shorty's. Wondering if a smith enterprises SOCOM short gas plug would work in it? Threads same/different?

I'm trying to find a way to utilize the bayonet lug and it's really close and that gas plug looks to be about the right length to give enough room to mount.

Also anyone know Canadian dealers with SEI gear? I see brownell.com carries them and seeing how the part is under $100 that might work to but supporting the Canadian first is my preference
 
Metric threads. You would need a whole new gas cylinder, and good luck trying to get a socom gas plug. They are around, but for the most part you have a better chance of being invited to an orgy at the Playboy mansion. There was someone rying to get a distributorship going up here but it fell thru. I talked to someone at SEI and they said that they were up to their asses in government contracts and selling to Canada wasn't on their radar for the time being. Brownells will ship some SEI stuff (extended bolt stops for instance) but not others. Sometimes i think they flip a coin.
 
Is it just me or are the Socom gas plugs not designed to also let a greater volume of gas to make up for the shorter, 16" barrel of the Socom? Not sure how that would effect cycling in an 18.5" rifle...

Good point! And yes they do have a larger volume to allow the gas to expand more and lessen recoil... 16-18.5 is 2.5.... 18.5-22 is 3.5... Shorty is closer to SOCOM but you could be right and the plug might cause gas pressure issues.
 
Get a springfield or 7.62firearms gas system and run it with the socom plug.
I've done this for 2 clients now and has been a popular gas system option for 16" up to 18.5" rifles. As some folks stateside were having short stroking issues with the 18" and 18.5 inch criterion/krieger barrels, the nifty trick is to use the socom plug. More internal volume , more gas being pressurized in the cylinder to cycle the action with.
Has zero problems ordering this item from brownells, the only viable source for legally obtaining one.

There is just enough wall thickness to enlarge the chinese plug's internal volume. I've done this procedure one several problematic shortened chinese rifles with excellent results. I pirated the idea while reading about short stroking 18" krieger barrelled rigs stateside and some of the solutions that some folks came up with.

Would I need just the gas cylinder or do I need the piston too?
