I'd like to get a Kar98K but am hesitant due to the fear of getting a poor quality cannibalized shot-out thing.

Can these rifles be had with the stamps and codes intact? Moreover the Russian captured rifles have no screws in the trigger guard and no cleaning rods? Why? What was the rationale behind removing them?
How difficult is it to scope ordinary Kar98Ks?

Any ideas where I can begin looking for a good rifle?

RC will usually have all markings present except the swastika's will be peened. Cleaning rods, locking screws, & front sight hoods are easy to find if you want to replace them.
Drilling and tapping for a scope is not a good idea, you can get scout mounts that replace the rear sight (no mods to the gun) and there are crappy no gunsmithing mounts that require wood work to fit. I'd avoid all of these and just learn how to shoot with irons.
Jean at P&S will pick out a nice rifle for you.

Ahh the mint all matching K98 in Canada. Its tough to find and when you do find it they almost never sell. It took me 2 years to find one and ill never sell it. Absolutely mint CE 44. Its almost scary :) So was the price I payed for it. Dont even think about buying/investing in a k98 sniper until youve done some bigtime research. Richard D. Law's "Backbone of the Wehrmacht" is the bible on K98's. I suggest you get it. :) I agree with hitzy learn to shoot with ironsights. If you want to do target shooting/hunting get a target/hunting rifle. Why people insist on drilling/tapping a k98 is beyond me.

If you really want a K-98 with a scope, I am sure their are plenty of them already out their. My grandpa had one, but mind you when he got the rifle it was just the barrel action and receiver and he put a stock on it. Its a great rifle, the scope on it is from the fifties and it looks almost like a period sniper (Sort of:D)
