I am pondering the idea of adding a 30 06 to the toy chest ( believe it or not I have never owned one ) I like rifles that are capable of hitting a deer sized target out to 500 yds.

Has anyone had any first hand range or hunting experience with this round at the 500 - 600 yd mark. If so what model rifle do you use and what loads were you using.( hunting model prefered )

Before anyone tears me a new one for talking about shooting deer at 500 yards I won't be blasting away at deer at 500 plus yards. I just like having a rifle that can do it. :)

the cartridge is certainly up to the task, its just a matter of finding/building the rifle that can match it

the best long range 30-06 load is arguably a 165 grain boat tail launched at around 2850-2900 fps. Using the Nosler 165 grain Ballistic tip as an example (or Accubond if you prefer), it will hit the 500 yard line going 2050 fps, and packing 1540 ft-lbs (.475 BC @ 2875 f/s). Properly placed, no deer will shrug that off

The 30-06 was made a 100 years ago. They didn't invent 500 yards until faitly recently. You need a .300 Ultramag. Just ask Remington. :p

Like TB said, the 165-168 grain bullets are some of the most popular extreme range bullets. Work up a load and have fun.

a 30-06 is a great gun whenever you need it to be.

Currently I am using a tikka t3 lite in 30-06. 3200 3x9x40 scope on it w/ millet rings.

the worse part about this setup is the millet rings.

don't let anyone steer you away from the plastic on the tikka. It's light weight and has handled its share of abuse. It's a meat rifle, not one you look at and are afraid to get it out and dirty. With a 3200 scope on it I know I can take it anywhere and I'm not worried about getting scratches on the plastic.

The plastic is hard, hard plastic... very hard to break.

Here's a range review and pictures:

By the way: the best thing about the tikkas? They shoot great right out of the box. No work needed. Fantastic trigger, too.

If you take a look at my Avatar, you will see a typical group from my Remington 700 SSDM 30-06. It shoots 150's, 165's, 180's and 200's into very small clusters. Most cosmopolitan rifle I have owned in ages. If you are contemplating using 165/168 grain bullets, try IMR 4350, Vihtavuori N160, W760, H414, Accurate 2700, IMR 4831, Norma 204. My pet 165 grain bullet is the Partition, but the Accubond and the TSX are also excellent. Regards, Eagleye.

This is a 100 yard group using the lowly Hornady 165 gr Interlock BTSP from a "brand new never fired " Tikka M65 that was purchased new in 1978 by a member's father. I got it earlier this year.

With accuracy like this, I think it's a safe bet the rifle will hold them together a little farther down range. :)
