The only thing to add to this statement would be the "Old Masters" Gel Stain in Red Mahogany. It will look a milion times better with the tung oil treatment!You can do two things:
You can chemically strip, buff with 00 steel wool, followed by 0000 steel wool, then 2 to 3 coats of tung oil, OR
You can remove the stock and put on a plastic stock.
I have done both, and love them both. My laminate stock looks like brand new.
Would re-ddoing my SKS stock be bad or devalue it?

Chinese, the wood starts pretty rough, so who cares.
I had my Chinese SKS for near twenty years now. I couldn't stand that Number 12 Picnic Table Orange, colour of the stock. I stripped it and simply clear stained it and it changed the appearnace altogether. I have recieved a lot of compliments on it, and I am far less than amateur when it came to doing it.

I already re-did one of mine in "cabernet" stain (debated between mahogany and cabernet). The sanding removed 95+% of all marks and dings on the stock, and I am much happier with the look of it now. As a side note, if you clear coat, use semi-gloss, not gloss! Ask me how I know...

I plan on stripping and staining the stock on my Type 56 SKS. Luckily I work at a company that manufactures stains and lacquers in one of our divisions so I can choose from tens of thousands of custom colours and have it sprayed and lacquerd professionaly. Looking forward to my project
