Would You Actually Trade Your M14 For An FAL?

What made the ishapore 1A1 such a crappy
Rifle ? Cuz I got one .. Haven't shot 50 rounds thru it since I bought it in 1990.. I had a hk91 too, but sold it.. Why I'll never know.. It was heavy , but really accurate.

i dont know how guys that have used both can even have a second thought about the m14 being better then the right arm of the free world.

lets see off the top of my head:
gas plug comes loose thru vibration/recoil within 1 mag
the screws on the rear sights also come loose thru shooting, at least on my 2 norcs. And the replacement italian garand sights arent that much better for that imo
bolts that have been known to self disassemble during loading.
wood stocks will "eventually" have the trigger area compressed enough to be loose if you leave the trigger group locked in
bolt catch will unlock if placed on the left side
that style of safety sucks imo.

FN all day, everyday

I used to own a real TRW M14 and a real C1A1 Fal back in the late 80's...:(
I loved them both.
I recently had a Norc M305, what a POS compared to a REAL M14. Sold it, lost interest. Once you've owned the real deal nothing else matters.
If I could go back in time I would have never sold either.
The FN all the way!

Range rifle - real M14. I used to shoot a stock HRA with a fibreglass stock that shot better than any FN I ever used. I also like the feel of the M14 for shooting. Fighting/field rifle - the FNC1. There is also a bias to what you were issued and trained on.

The FN had a very nice adjustable gas plug which allowed you to "balance" the rifle. I also liked the fold down disc aperture sight. But the FN had a very nasty design that left some folks with a bruised face and a sore shoulder after a range session. It was heavy (but you got used to it!). It was pretty tough. But imo it was just "ok" .. the C2 was "ok" also and certainly delivered the desired "beaten zone"

The first time I fired an M305 (after years with the FNC1A1) with IVI ammo I was SURPRISED at how soft it shot and how accurate it was out of the box. It would be nice to own an FN .. but I would shoot the M305/M14 more. For shooting -- I can't say I miss having an FN. As a collectible -- yes it would be nice.

Nope.

I remember when all those cheap crappy Ishapore FN's came in the country, and were selling for $99 bucks. Did not buy.

All the CF ones I ever saw were also beat to crap after decades of use.

Now, even though you can't even shoot the things, and there is a diminishing pool of 12(5) owners out here people still want inflated prices for the things. I might consider buying one on the cheap just because I can, but not for the prices people want.

Nostalgia aside, dollar for dollar the Norc m305 is a way better value. We don't appreciate what we have.

X2, bet lots of the people here that said they would trade for a FAL have never shot one lol , never shot a FAL thats even close to as accurate as my most accurate Norc lol .. Most FALs i have shot group about as good as a average AK or SKS, maybe cause they have VERY horrendous triggers !! , they sure are not much lighter than a M14 and the sights are not quite as good . They have slightly better ergos thats it .. Remember the US army was going to adopt the FAL at one point put it in trials against the M14 then decided to keep the M14.. The m14 seems to beat the FAL in the competitive long range shooting world . The M14 is WAY more tuneable and upgradeable too. good luck finding quality match grade FAL barrels .

This means absolutely NOTHING.
With all the backroom political shenanigans that goes on prior to selecting anything, who chose what says nothing about the item. Its more about who has the congressman's attention.
