I love the FAL series of rifle as much or more than the next guy, but would you actually replace your M14 with one (if you could only have one) if they were legal/non-restricted? I know many M14 guys are making do with the M14 merely because its one of the few non-resrticted 7.62 battle rifles we are actually allowed to own. But when it comes down to it, it is in many/most ways a superior rifle. So, would you actually give it up for a FAL? Just for fun lets say they are both genuine government issue (NOT NORC!), semi-auto only and the highest quality versions of each (TRW/FNC1) to make a fair comparison. The FAL is a cool, pistol gripped rifle with left hand cocking, but those are really the only practical features it has over the M14.

M14 has better sights, less parts and relatively easy accurizing methods etc., where as the FAL has better ergonomics, adjustable gas system and left hand cocking etc. Id say the M14 comes up on top.

For Canadian military history the FNC1 has no comparison.

Id get both! My grandpa carried an Fal through out his entire military career wish i could ask his opinion but due to family problems i cant. He also worked in the factory making c7 rifles after in the 80's

Aside from the appeal of the uniqueness of the FAL, its unobtanium status and the coolness of things that aren't common place, I actually prefer the M14 for its layout. Before Norinco came along with these dirt cheap clones, real M14's were rare and coveted.

Well said.

I prefer the ergonomics and weight distribution of the FAL far more then a real M14 (no Norinco).

I would take an M1 Garand over the Chinese M14s any day of the week, and twice on Sundays.

Not really.
When the early Norcs were selling for $400 . Lever brought in crates of original USGI M14 surplus rifles with the selector welded up & they sold for $350.
