Would you choose a Jimmy or a Cherokee for hunting?

I have two offers for what is supposed to be my main vehicle and at the same time the one going on the hunting trips.

one is an 1998 Envoy (just a Jimmy with a different name and more leather- for that year) and the other is a Cherokee.

Which one would you pick? Prices are in the same range.
Please detail you experience with them.
Thank you!

I would go with the Jimmy because Envoys are nice and I wouldn't want to ruin the interior. if you don't care about that, I would go with an Envoy because it is bigger but with a Jimmy you should get better gas mileage.

Either or.

Do they both have 4x4? Which one do you like better? Which has lower km's? which is a better colour?

jeep waste of money, wont last as long and is more expensive to repair, GM for sure.

This man obviously has not worked on both
The jeep is cheaper and easier to repair and has a much better 4wd system INCLUDING a solid front axel not cv boots

Niether, get yourself a 4 wheel drive 1/2 ton, with an extended cab. Room to load a quad, or sled if you want, and then you don't have to pull a trailer, and there's still room in the cab for gear that you don't want outside. I used to use a my jacked up Bronco for hunting and after getting a pickup I'd never take it hunting again. Trucks are the way to go.

The man obviously wants an SUV.....there can really only be one choice: Toyota 4Runner.

I've owned a Jimmy, and will NEVER own another. My friend also had one. And will NEVER own another. Can't really give any first hand experience about the Jeep.

The Cherokee I owned was great. I drove it down snowmobile trails in the middle of winter; bogs, mud, rocks, and even a small river or two throughout the warmer months. I high-centred it once and simply lifted the front end and my wife backed it out. Light, reasonably powerful, and inexpensive.

My only significant concern with a Cherokee is that you need extra leafs in the back if you expect to carry or tow any weight. Those springs make the ride much harsher.

I traded-in that Jeep because my family grew and it didn't have enough rear passenger space.

I now hunt with an old Chevy 1/2 ton 4x4. I get the same fuel mileage, can haul my quad or sled, pack moose without worrying about any mess, and even haul larger stuff. However I could never drive my truck into some of the places that I took that Jeep.

I had a 1978 CJ-7 with Quadra-Trac.

Great 4x4, go anywhere, nimble.

But mechanically a POS that would eat you alive in drivetrain repairs.

I drive lots of new GM and Ford 4x4 PU's for work. They're great when they're new but when they age, it can get expensive.

Maybe Jeeps have gotten better but I'll stick with Toyota for the long haul where the repairs dollars are coming out of my pocket.

As a Cherokee owner, on my second one, I guess I am biased, but, I feel the GM Jimmy and it's clones are set up more for highway use. The Jeep is more truck like, and better set up off road.
They are both very capable off road, but, of the two, I'd take the Jeep any day.

thanks for the input!

The main use will be driving it on a daily basis, but it will also be my hunting rig. Can't take wife's Integra hunting.

1. Which on is harder on gas?
2. average, which one will cost more on repairs (reliability?)
3. I'm not going proffesional offroading, but something that is 4x4 is bound to do better than my van.
Are the good sides of GM offset by the Jeep's off road capability? It looks like a 4000 km roundtrip for moose hunting and only a few hundreds on actual gravel/mud/pots&holes, etc.

I wish I can have both, but I must pick one. The Envoy 98 is just like the Jimmy, but with leather and nice trims. First year of production... but a Jimmy at heart...

I have to choose to buy the Envoy now or wait for a Cherokee to come up. If I had both cars in a lot waiting for me, it would be easy, but I rely in your experiences to help me make up my mind - which is pretty hard right now....

I edited to add :for the guys recommending trucks instead of the SUV, please specipy the model/year. Thank you

By that description, sounds like either one would work.
Cherokee should get about 21 MPG, worse in winter.
no idea on the GMC.
I've not had a lot of maint. issues, in 110,000 km on this one, and 130,000 miles on my last one.

Understand however, that 4WD, any brand, costs more to maintain.

If it were me, I would definitely get the Cherokee no questions asked. But then again, I'm a jeep-lovin kinda girl ;)

If you are looking into trucks, perhaps go for a Toyota. That would be my truck of choice except I hear parts can be rather expensive.
