Would you choose a Jimmy or a Cherokee for hunting?

Well i'd go with the jeep easy to put a cheap lift kit in has solid front axel, and decent power try to get a 93 or newer with the 4.0 HO, My 89 has over 300,000km on it and is starting to ask for some minor repairs. My old jimmy was also a good vehicle, but lift kits are very expensive for even a small lift. So if you want a out of the box off road vehicle, get the cherrokee, put some poly spring spacers in the front for 10 bucks each, then buy some 235/75 R15 mud tires and your good to go

I have 1990 Cherokee and I love it. I do all my own maintenance and repairs and there has been nothing out of the norm for the 10 years I have owned it (brakes, front u-joints, shocks, exhaust and 1 front wheelbearing), pretty good for 375,000 km. At 350,000km I did a full rebuild on the motor, it did not out and out quit just started to burn a bit of oil. I also have a 77 chev 3/4 ton thats lifted with 35" mudders for the really nasty stuff. I love em both.

The suggestion of a 1/2 ton is a poor one in the bush, the Jeep Cherokee or the S-10 Jimmy can get into and then turn around and get out of places no P/U can. Unless you load a 4x4 P/U,they are only front drivers, and poor ones at that. When loaded they are too heavy for hopping from grass clump to grass clump. Leasons learned after nearly 30 years of 4x4s.

But the difference of an easy drive and the end of the road, here in B.C., is 15minutes of walking. It's also much faster than 4 hours of digging, and less work.

Thank you for the advice!

The Envoy Quite different from a Jimmy/blazer) has permanent 4WD. OUCH!!!!!!
very nice inside! Dreamy.

I'll try to get a decent Cherokee or a Dakota ext. cab. Still looking.
3.7 or 4L? maybe the new model launch in July will brin the prices down...

ok if you guys are looking for the ultimate bush beater/hunting rig when i was about 15 -16 years old i bought my self a old chevette me and a buddy replaced the coil springs front and rear with slightly taller ones *i think they came of of a jeep actully LOL* anyway it lifted the car about 5 inches we then mounted some decent rubber on the 14" rims *they where realy mean looking and dirt cheap at the scrap yard* then we remopved the grill, bumper skirts rear hatch and just about every thing plastic including most of the interior, the exhaust was cut at the downtube and flip upright and run out the engine bay the intake was raised useing some pvc pipe off the carb about 1 foot long and bolted to the carb*do you have any clue how hard it is to find a 12"bolt LOL anyway there was very few places we couldnt get into with that till someone called the police about us running around with no exhaust or muffling devices ehhehehe anyway i should dig up some pics if i can find them i will post them

Jeep... yeah Ok. I have had three Jeeps and five Jimmys and Blazers... get a mid 90's Jimmy, they are very good trucks.

thats why you went through 5 of them hahahahahahahahaha

it all comes down to what and were you need it, if your going extreme like through logging blocks and up uncut power lines etc you dont want a fancy truck, parts arent cheap and they dont look purdy fer long if your looking at that hunting spot were you drive through the river, over the mountain and down the canyon to cross 300 yards of blowdown get a CJ5 jeep , spend a couple grand and 4 link it with a good winch and your laffing :D

man if that lol
i spent barely 300 bucks if you count the CB and antenna, and replacing the gas tank and i manage to get through most of what the area around here can give me so far 4ft of water and jus tabout every hill stump and bush hasnt stopped my cherokee yet no winch no 4 link and no super expensive lift kits and fancy tires

yea but yer not in the mountains of BC either ;) :D

and lift kits arent that expensive anymore in the end regardless of what you run it all comes down to 1 thing and thats your tires realy , crappy tires can ruin a good day in a hurry, I dont mean you should run out and buy 40" super swampers but dont expect to go were they go with geolanders or road kings either :p

i am currently running 225/75r15 blizzack knock offs down to the tread bars and i still get int oand out of most of the gooey stuff except when my i hang up on the gas tank and mid frame area LOL now if someone wnats to kindly donate a set of say 50% 235/75r15 bfg ats or similer i'll gladly take and run them till there drag slicks :D

once again terrain differences makes a difference , bfg's mud terrain KO's are a wicked tire and a great wearing tire for highway use, I run TSL's yes they shake the snot out of me on highway but 3 feet of clay mud as just an excuse to make the truck dirty :D
I will say avoid any claw type tread , those things are just junk, but with the cost of rubber these days its hard to get awsome all round tires for under 1200 bucks, I think kal tire wants about 300 a boot for bfg mud terrains and Im into my tsl's for 2200 bucks and the new tires for next year are about 640 a boot (thats a tsl bogger in 40" x 18"x16.5)

yes I refuse to grow up and go around mud holes :p

your getting pegged for prices out there when i am not such a cheap bastard i can get new BFg AT or MT for 145 +mounting for 31x10.5 here from a buddy of mine but like i siad i am a cheap bastard LOL my 3" lift cost me a total of $45 at home depot :D

yes there are cheaper places but remember I live in northern BC and tire shops are limited to what you can get here, we have a kal tire and a tirecraft shop thants it and I only deal at kal tire, tread warrenties and free flat repairs for life, free rebalencing etc it all adds up eventualy and I get good deals as they supply all my logging truck tires etc and 300 a boot is based on a 35 or 315 tire 16.5 rim

i dealt with kal tire back home when i was fixing them big trucks your smart to stick with them i find the closest thing to decent tire deals here are some ol buddys of mine that run some long haul up and down everyone esle are dinks LOL i still like my discount bin stuff though LOL

thanks for the input!

It looks like a 4000 km roundtrip for moose hunting and only a few hundreds on actual gravel/mud/pots&holes, etc.

So where are you going to stuff a moose in a Sport Utility if you shoot one? I have helped guys load deer into Broncos and Explorers and have to admit that I don't think a moose would fit. ;)

I did come across an old guy in a Jimmy that had a neat loading rig for deer. He would roll down both front windows and place a log sideways through the openings. Attaching a come-along to the centre of the log would allow him to winch a deer into the back while sitting in the rear seat. All the deer blood soaking into the carpet however probably killed the resale value of the rig however.

Buy a 1/2 ton Pickup - I personally am partial to GM but to each his own - with a 5 speed tranny. My short box standard cab Z-71 with a 350 cu in engine not only gets 22+ mpg on the highway it was enough nuts to pull a well-loaded trailer.
