I have not seen a poll on this yet, so, if we were allowed, would you use a handgun for hunting? Why or why not?

EDIT: This is what got me to start this poll.

I know that this group has pretty much no association with the people who set the hunting regs, but its my understanding that this is the Alberta Equivalent to the BCWF, which holds a little sway with the MOE.

AND I apologize for my lack is spelling talent.

I would if I could. I think handgun hunting would be similar to bow hunting in that you need to get quite close to the animal. It would be challenging, that's for sure.

If we were allowed to carry for hunting, we would all carry for defense (bears and such), so the opportunity would arise eventually.

I don't think I would intentionally go out and hone my handgun hunting skills, but in the general process of proficiency...

I am not a hunter, but don't condem those who do hunt, but hunters should be alloowed to carry a hand gun while hunting and to hunt with a hand gun

My Papa and uncles usually carried .22 pistols when they were out hunting deer and moose. They used them for partridge and rabbit. I have a photo of my Papa and my Mother with a wolf that he shot with a pistol. The bounty receipt came with the photo- $25 in 1951. If i could hunt with a handgun i would definately bring a .22 for day to day use and I wouldn't mind using my 629 on a whitetail.

When I've been out hunting for deer, I always saw the odd grouse and thought "Boy it would be nice to have a .22 pistol right now..."

I would like to get a nice .44 magnum for hunting large game, but we'll see how the AFGA resolution plays out...

Given a choice I would prefer to hunt with a real hunting handgun like an Thompson Center model in a cartridge like the .30-30 or 7mm-08. In fact I would never use a rifle, I like a challenge.
I like this attitude.

A friend and I were out yesterday punching a gong a 50 yards pretty consistently.
We had a old pair of 3 screw ruger SA revolvers.
Great way to spend 1/2 an afternoon.

My club has a lot of hand gun shooters.
For many it is all point and spray from 10 yards.

Picture a group of young males, hunting for the 1st time, with IPSC style guns.

Or perhaps highly regulated...
Proven 10 years experience
SA revolvers only
manditory skill test
44 mag and factory hunting ammo as minimum power factor

I would be shopping here...

would be nice to pack a .22 when checking traps...and would give a real world purpose for the 500 S&W...
big game wise...nice to have the option but likely wouldn't just because there is nothing a handgun can do that a rifle can't do better in a dedicated hunting situation.

handgun hunting

i would definitely hunt small game. handgun hunting has a history in Canada and has only been unlawful since the 1970s although i stand to be corrected on the exact time .i can not see why the government has such a distrust of its citizens that they forbid this activity .as long as the handgun was out in the open and not concealed i fail to see a problem .there are many handguns that are purpose built for hunting the remington xp 100 ,weatherby cfp, contenders as well as some single shot shotgun pistols in 20 28 and 410 that would be suitable as well as many revolvers and the list goes on .

i find the grip on the contender feels a little "funny" to me- i'd stick with 308m but in one of those "eliminator" kits- teh ones that use the 1911 frame but a bolt action on the upper
