I was late on gettin on the SKS train, but I'm glad I jumped on. Such a fun rifle. Seeing all these posts makes me feel like I need to get a few more... soon...

Is this not just beautiful?

Doing the research now as a newbie on the sks and cannot discern quality difference between the Russian (my heritage) and the Chinese (norinco)...comments would be appreciated...thanks in advance.

I'm a newbie as well. The firearms I will buy when my PAL comes through are:
SKS
Tokarev
1911 of some sort
Oh, and an uncle is selling me a nice Ruger MkII for $50 so I can practice indoors cheaply and easily. SCORE!

Forgot to mention in my first post (just back from 12 hour shift and tired), Marstar is apparently bringing in 10,000 sks's, is the number now 70,000 ?

Thanks for the reply Deckard, my research has me understanding chrome bores are all but Yugoslavians, even the Norinco's have chromium, what is the quality gap? I have been collecting since grade 6 elementry school, taken a Hiatus with kids and all, and now am winding it up again, enjoy the research part which leads to the fun factor. First gun was a savage model 3b, rcmp had to get involved with registering it (.22 semi, actuated at forend) doesn't shoot straight but a hoot to fire.

The Ruger comes from my uncle, who bought it years ago for $50 to get it out of a house with a bad domestic situation - he didn't really want it. Its been collecting dust for years. When he heard I was getting my PAL he offered it to me for what he paid for it. Like I said, SCORE!!!!

The Military Chi-Coms are fine SKSs. It's the late commercial ones that sometimes leave a bad impression. These are the ones that get all the complaints about being not as good looking as kyhber pass guns. They all seem to shoot, just the fit and finish is lacking.

SKS Junk Rifle ?

NOT one bit !! and would I buy one "in a heart beat " I have a nice one a 54 Tula and have been thinking about a case or two ! Will they increase in value maybe, maybe not I don't care, I can always have it put in my will to be given to my grandkids, i'm sure they won't mind...........:D

I would go with Russian SKS as it is original one. My personal opinion Russian is the way to go, but then I am Russian and it could influence my choice.

Just Buy one you will be happy.

I've got a Russian SKS, I actually bought 2 one to test to the limits and abuse the other is in beautiful shape, If the apocalypse were to happen I would grab my SKS over any of the much more expensive rifles I own. it's a solid all-arounder and it harder than a rock.
