Would you lend out your rifle?

I'm struggling a bit with this one. Finally made it out yesterday with a couple buddies. I know it's a tad overkill for deer but I took out my new CZ 375 h&h. I haven't even taken an animal with it yet and one buddy kind of puts me on the spot and says "Hey can I borrow your rifle when your not hunting?". I was kind of caught off guard and stumbled on my words a bit, so a bit later he asks again. Never really gave a straight answer. So now feel a bit guilty. This guy will always drive(my truck is in the shop with the engine out), has helped and took us around the area the last three seasons and is generally a great guy. I am quite a finicky person. Have lent out a lot of stuff over the years, some come back the same way it went, some not so good, and some not at all. It's not that I don't trust him just that I have a hard time lending things of this type. I mean I am the type of person who bought a second chainsaw and set of golf clubs because friends keep asking and I hate saying no. Also, not that it matters but I really don't ask to borrow other peoples stuff. I won't even take the in laws quad out even though they offered numerous times. Just don't like doing it.
So just for interest sake, what would you do?
 
I always take a spare rifle on hunts,and I have lent out a rifle,when a hunting partner had scope issues with his rifle.However,that is the only situation where I have ever lent out a firearm.
 
I have been in the same boat before. I would tell him that this is a very expensive thing to loan out, and would he loan you one of his favorite rifles? What if he drops it and breaks something? The reason I am saying this is I lent my cousin a semi 22 once. When he brought it back it was seized solid. Needless to say I was pissed. Never lent him anything again; not even an hammer.
 
i lent my buddy my shotgun since he lives in prime waterfowl areas and just has a few rifles and a compound bow.

Absolutely. I always have a back up as well and would not hesitate if I was along. Have always let people try/use my guns at the range, usually on my dime with my ammo getting folks interested. I have made a few great friends and sent quite a few went out got licenses and shoot regularly now. Now, I use my rifles and none are safe queens, but I also am quite particular on keeping as good as possible. I put couple real good dents and scratches on my new mod 70 last year that I still kick myself over. It's not an issue of trust, the money to replace it and his integrity are not issues, yet still hung up on it. Maybe I'm just selfish.
 
This could just possibly be a little test he is doing on you just to see if you are the type of guy that gives as well as takes. You could call it a friendship test. I personally would not want to lend out my brand new high dollar gun.ask him if he would like something more suitable for what he is going to hunt, assuming you have other rifles to lend.
 
There is very few people I will lend my prized possesions to, funny thing is those same people would never ask because they know what that stuff means to me
 
If you trust him, why not?

For my first moose hunt I had to borrow a rifle from a buddy. He got it back all cleaned up and oiled plus a very large share of my moose meat.
 
If you feel funny about it, no. It will just bug you when he has it, and every scratch or dent will be suspect. Tell him the truth, that it's your baby, and you don't lend it out to anyone, nothing personal. You may have another that he's welcome to though...

If it doesn't bother you, hand it over, but be honest with yourself.
