Finally got around to stripping this old girl tonight.

From what I have red, it appears I have a non-refurb original Russian SKS. That is the extent of my knowledge, I am curious if there is anything collectable about this rifle. I have a second which is an obvious return with bbq paint. If this one is collectible it will live in the safe and I use good old BBQ as my shooter.

Thanks in advance.

I noticed when uploading, the dust cover has a small mark after the date, maybe a small r? For refurbished?

It does look like a non refurb but the mag was replaced at one point
It also looks like it has the stampings around the cross bolt on the stock
The r after the year is what the Russians call “year”, so your rifle was made in year 1951
You can also check the stake marks on the bayo bolt to see if they were restaked at one time
And also see if the ser number is electropencilled under the rear sight
Nice rifle!

I will check under the site next time I'm at my bench.

I agree, it's a nice rifle! Barrel looks really good too. I purchased both rifles from Cabelas and they are entirely different, pretty wild.

The big question is: shooter or collector?

A midly mismatched tula, which is probably better than my full matching frakenpinned sks.

Yea the mags were messed up when North Sylvia brought these in, whoever they got to pin the mags were not told to match them up again, sad. Do you have a couple pics not quite so close, top and sides?

I will grab some more pics tomorrow. I have her all broke down though, plan to soak everything minus the stock in hot water and simple green tomorrow and scrub all the gunk out.

Do I have to break down the trigger group for cleaning or is soaking it and then scrubbing it out with a nylon brush "good enough"?

Trigger group should not need to be broken down to soak. The firing pin will need to be removed and degreased to avoid slamfires.
Yes,, there are quite a few YouTube videos on cleaning the sks, some are better than others, but make sure the firing pin and channel are clean and the pin rattles when shook! On initial firing, just load one round first and test fire, then two a couple times. Just to make sure all is well befor you run 5 rounds. I never had an issue but in a rare case people have, not often. I believe Wolfe springs make the return spring, not sure who has them, I believe a place in BC does but their name eludes me right now. Have fun with your sks!

Found one on that google thing,, good info on the site too!

Haha yeah thanks for that. I've been watching a ton of videos on cleaning this old girl out. The hour ling video from iraqveteran888 seems to be the best so far.

Thanks for the link!

Edit: I actually found his site yesterday, I guess I was looking for other possible options. I think if I went with that fell I would send him the whole bolt/carrier and go for the whole package.

I didn't see anywhere on that site that he does trigger jobs, do you happen to know otherwise?

Thanks again!!

I had one that is the mate to that one, and the mag was mismatched as well.same condition and year.
I had some wolf trigger spring kits for these, gone now.
You don't need a spring on the firing pin
If the painted one has a spring on the firing pin, it is because that one was sold to someone, and he put it in,
Than returned it ,Would be mt thought on it.

Then get a different non matching mag if it bothers you.In the future all SKS will have to have frankenpinned mag. The inside pin breaks off easily.

That's the plan, it's inexpensive. My only contention is that someone ruined a perfectly beautiful gun when a simple pin on the follower could of sufficed. Even if those pins are prone to falling off from use.

Yep if they fall off, the job was messed up, Maybe welded buy a government guy?
I have seen them with a bit of flat iron welded on, those where done O.K. , that was quite awhile ago.

Both my sks have a pin welded in the mag. Looks pretty flimsy but it should hold up for a while. Its ridiculous these rifles are restricted to five rounds. At least make it 10 so you can use the full mag. I can see maybe not allow 30 round after market mags, but come on...
