Trying to figure out a route for a CRF Stainless 35 Whelen,

Buy a new stainless Montana V2 (Extreme Vantage)
Or
Rebarrel a used FN made Winchester M70ss and add Iron sights

The end cost would be similar.

Anyone here shoot a Stainless Montana?, thoughts?

My brother in law has a stainless montana in 3006. My first impression was wow this thing is rough. I would find a nice slick classic stainless M70 for a donor and never look back.
 
Not every Porsche owner is a 911 SC.
Some even settle for the 914.
Not saying one gun is either or, but it would behoove you to search one out and handle it personally no ;)
Be an interesting project though...thoughts on stock color and barrel contour, rate of twist ?

I've had a few M70's through my hands now, and have heard mixed reviews on the Montana.

Stock would be a basic black, and I'd be leaning to a fluted 1:12 twist #3 barrel trimmed to 23"
 
The Montana reminds me of rimfire rifles as it is picky with what ammo it is fed. It was not a struggle however to find the right combination and now the first and second shot are rarely not touching at 100 yards. Because of the barrel contour the third shot is one inch away from the first/second. Shots are approx. 30 seconds apart as do not see the appreciation in a three shot group over 45 minutes.
The action is one of the smoothest CRF actions I have experienced. Learn how the rifle cycles and there is no concern for fast follow-up shots.
I have been a european/push fed prude for a long time, however the Montana has impressed me a lot.

I was thinking about the same thing (35 Whelen in a CRF). I think I would go with the M70, or similar Mauser action just out of personal preference. 30/06 should work. Would have to check the barrel channel to see if it is deep/wide enough for a slightly heavier contour? Friend of mine told me to go the 338/06 route as it's a far superior round according to him. I dunno. I really like the 35 Whelen. My Remington shoots really well.
 
There are 2 Portuguese fn m70's in my house and one 100% USA made by fn m70. The Portuguese ones are 10x better fit and finish. I would be going to one of those

Thanks for the input,

I didn't think there would be an issue with the barrel contour heating up on the Montana, the website lists it as a #3 sporter.

Are you maybe referring to the Kimber Montana?

That's the best advice in this thread....

I have nothing against kimbers...... but the 70 is a time trusted and true platform and one I have enjoyed....

If this were a chainsaw form, this question would be like asking "should I put a 28" bar on my big stihl or buy an echo".......
 
Just to clarify.

This is would be the M70 compared to the Montana Rifle Company Vantage (basically a M70)
 
I've had experience with both, and I think you'd be okay either way. I've had no issues with the M70 save for them being a bit more picky about the load than my other rifles in the same calibers. My Montana Rifle Co. is a bit of an enigma. The fit and finish is not superb by any stretch - it should certainly be better given the price - but its a fantastic shooter. I keep wanting to order another Montana because I can get the caliber I want the way I want in a great performer, but then I look at the rough details and I cringe and put off the decision for another day.

I doubt I helped you, but that's my experience.
