Would you shoot it ?.

I can't imagine why it would have been drill that way, unless it was for some weird scope mount. I would be OK with shooting it, but I wouldn't tell anyone else it would be OK. Make sense?

If they won't take it back, I would shoot it, and keep an eye on it. It's in the area that is stressed by the bolt thrust only, and I doubt it will fail from a round hole being in it. As per Post 17, he drilled and tapped in the bolt lug recess on that receiver.

Would i shoot it? Yes, no problem. No different then a receiver drilled and tapped for scope bases. Would I keep it? No but strictly for esthetic reason.

I think it was drilled to provide an escape for gas if a case ruptured. But then somebody came along and put a plug in the hole. The plug bothers me more than the hole, if a case ruptures the screw might become a projectile. The hole itself does not appear to be in a critical area that weakens anything.
Yes it looks like dual hatcher holes.

I ordered the guns like 6-7 months ago daso definitely out of the return window. Maybe I will send them an email to see if they could do anything we shall see. Probably just end up keeping it.
Thanks for the input guys :).

Can't imagine why anyone would do that for gas escape? I think the mauser is designed for gas from a blown case to flow back along the bolt raceways and be deflected upwards away from shooters face by the bolt shroud.
Maybe I'm mistaken?

The no.4 vent hole is on the left side of the receiver just above the stock line, same side as a right hand shooter’s face would be on.

As a carryover from my post in the Husqvarna thread.
This is a Husqvarna in 8x57 that seems to have threaded holes drilled thru the receiver.
Why was it done ? deactivation ? strange scope mount ? .
Altho the real question remains.... Would you shoot it?
The holes look to be at 45° from where the bolt lugs lock up, so, were it me, I would probably shoot it.

I might, however use US made SAAMI spec ammo, which basically duplicates .32 Sp ballistics. I think I would avoid Euro loaded ammo, or any milsurp which can be loaded very hot indeed.
