I've got an S&W 1006 fixed sight model (bought it new around 91). I also have the parts needed to make it an adjustable version, but it would require milling the slide to accept the adjustable sight.

I guess I'm wondering what it would do to the value of the gun.

Any variance from original is a deduction. However if its a keeper trick it out to your liking . How much of a deduction is subjective, but think 20% as a guide.
Some experienced shooters appreciate "Improvements" from original and you'll be even, especially on a modern gun.
 
That is a tough one....great pistol, and my heart says leave it alone, don't eff with it. But, if you shoot it and want to put those sights on it, and you'll never sell it then make it the way you want. But I don't think I would do it personally.
 
Exactly what plinker777 said. Fixed sights are drift adjustable and if you only use one type of ammo or load, you'll figure out your elevation hold. IMO, adjustable sights are for precision bullseye shooting only. They can also be knocked out of zero. Fixed sights aren't prone to change zero.

I personally always liked the look of the S&W 2nd / 3rd gen adjustable sights. The other thing is, after I bought the sight parts, I ended up buying a NIB 1006 with adjustables off a great guy on the EE. I've yet to fire that girl. To top it off, when I get home next week, I've got a new P220 in 10mm to Christian. I'm still on the fence, but leaning towards leaving it be. If I messed it up, I'd be sick over it.
 
If you've already got a 1006 with adjustable sights I would not change your other one. I think the Novak-style fixed sights on the 3rd Gen S&Ws are great and would leave them...the protective "wings" make the adjustable sights look too bulky to me. I would think that it'd kill the collector value for the pistol, too, since it's no longer made.

And while on the topiic of S&W 10mm autos...... I used to have a big S&W 10mm pistol. [Model 1066]. Sorry I sold it. :(

There's a nice 1086 on EE at the moment, but I can't pull the trigger on it without triggering a divorce. I'd imagine they could be quite snappy with full loads.
 
If it were me, I'd look for a spare slide to mess with. That way the original configuration can be restored unmolested....

Hindsight being what it is, I'm watching for a Remington-Rand 1911A1 slide....
