On a Rare occasion. Usually the deer I see are 100yrds or under though
Depends... On the circumstances, terrain, the gun I'm holding, the position, posture and disposition of the animal, the lighting, my ability to get to the location of the animal in a reasonable amount of time... If everything is a "green light," then yes.

I would only take a shot at 300 yards + if ALL the stars aligned...so to speak.
IF:
1. I had been recently doing significant practice at that distance
2. The weather and terrain supported the calculations
3. I had significant practice with that particular firearm and it supported long distance shooting.
4. The game animal was positioned appropriately

did you know a 300 win mag carries as much energy at 500 yards as the 30-30 does at about 50 yards...
I understand that we don't want to promote unethical shots here, for some of us we seem to focus more on the shooting then the hunting, and have invested alot of time and money into creating accurate shots with often over sized and/or expensive equipment to where the boundaries of an ethical shot have been pushed beyond traditional hunting is used to. Wether or not that takes away from the hunting experience is another can of worms, and I do not condone or condemn long range hunting, I would only condone taking a long shot if you would consider your self quite capable of dropping the animal on the first round and not losing it.
There is a time and place for long range hunting, it seems to be a trend and changing the sport in some ways lately.

Last year I was carrying a 257 Weatherby around for a few days.
Decided to change it up and grabbed a 30/30 for a day.
Guess what I saw on the other side of a field at 300ish meters?
Ain't that always the way? I was hunting archery early in the season and not having much luck. Put the bow up and grabbed the 410 from behind the truck seat to go looking for grouse. I'm sure from your experience you can figure out how that went.
I've killed several animals that were ranged at over three hundred yards. My last was an elk three years ago. I shot and practiced a lot and never felt luck was part of the equation. I have not practiced enough in the past three years so I have limited myself to a much shorter distance... passed up a nice dry WT doe at 220 yards because I felt luck WAS part of the equation. Couldn't get any closer and I did try.
