So you can buy all these over the counter, or are they LEH draws that you get every 4-5 years??
Still, if a guy had the time, money and luck, he could kill (without a draw)
3 deer (plus 10 Queen Charlotte deer)
2 black bear
5 bobcat
1 caribou
2 cougr
1 elk
1 moose
5 lynx
1 moose
1 goat
1 sheep
3 wolves
1 wolverine
Plus yotes NBL
grouse 5 per day
Waterfowl..
Other small stuff..
No, not really. We get 3 deer tags, 2 black bear tags, 1 moose, 1 elk, 1 sheep, 1 goat, 3 wolf (no cost) coyotes etc...There is usually opportunity to keep hunting...Or go along and help your buddies bag a deer or whatever. I've been on lots of hunting trips when I didn't have a tag for the species in question, just along to help out a buddy.
I don't get bored when hunting, even if I have filled my tags.
That's the difference. You guys want to fill tags, I want to hunt.
If I see a good animal, I willl shoot it regardless of if it was Day #1 Sept 10 or the last day Dec 10...But I will go get another tag, keep an eye out for a nice bear or just go out with buddies.
I've passed up several bucks this year, only finally shot one the other day, and I still have a week or so more to hunt with another tag.
So, nothing wrong with your system, if the primary reason to hunt is to fill tags, but not so good if you lke to be selective.
Slow senior,we choose to shoot our own.
It has nothing to do with beating our chest,if you choose to have someone else shoot your deer go ahead.
There is a post were the guy hasn't shot a deer in six years?I would be hunting somewhere else.
I have posted here that success is important to me as part of hunting,I am not the guy that says a good day is sitting in the woods.
I expect to shoot something every time I go hunting, whatever the game is,If not I would stay at home.
If it's got nothing to do with beating your chest,
WHY would anyone in their right mind pass up a nice tender two year old buck in favour of a big, gamey, tough, strong tasting 12 pt buckif you have a choice?
Don't know where you hunt, but the quality of my venison has always been the same..whether it field dressed 125lbs or 260lbs. So why would anyone in their right mind shoot a small deer when you can shoot a big one?![]()
Because if you don't shoot a small one there may be a chance you won't shoot any!
The only species that a LEH draw is mandatory is Grizzly, Bison and Roosevelt (Island and Coastal) Elk
Every other tag can be purchased over the counter, although not all species have open seasons in every area.
SOme areas have LEH due to a small population (or politics) and some simpley have no such animal. Can't hunt sheep in the Lower Mainland, or Moose on Van ISland for instance...

Thats a chance I'm willing to take...Sometimes I have gone 2 years without shooting a deer. And NOT because i didn't see anything,
just because I know the little ones will add weight and antler size by next year. I'm there for the experience.
...if I want meat I just walk out the door to the barnyard and shoot it.![]()

I've heard here, as uninspired and unimaginative as it is - is to shoot within your known limits and that implies practice. Practice, practice, practice - however hard it may be to get practice on true "running shots".
You took 2 weeks off work for 2 years & happy to not get some venny!
Sounds like a good experience![]()
My family would be happier eating a small one![]()
Hey Captonian. Nice setup. Is that a weiner on the deer?
3 weeks to be precise, for 2 years. And a very enjoyable time I had watching the does, fawns, and small 6-8 pointers, along with the grouse, owls, coyotes, fischers, woodpeckers, nuthatch's, creepers, etc, etc.![]()
There lies the huge difference. You pass up any deer you see here & there's a good chance you won't see another.
There's an average of 3-4 guys a week in our camp every year that don't see a deer. So as pointed out if you take 2 weeks off work to hunt, then you better shoot pretty when you get a shot, the bears are pretty much always hibernating by now, there's nothing else you can legally hunt, so by your system if we shot a deer 1st day we'd be relocated to being a camp drunk by the end of your holiday![]()

wow this post went sideways into the land of vitriol loooong ago. I'm almost sorry I created it.
I read an article in the Ontario Out of Doors and they asked the opinion of a few people on shooting at running game. The consensus seemed to be either don't, or keep it short. Of particular interest was Keith Cunningham (marine sniper, international competitor in service rifle and sniper shoots for decades and other such qualifications up the hoop, including a life long interest in hunting, and my former coach) who said he personally keeps his running shots at under 50 metres, or 50 yards when in the US. I find this a reasonable limit, however unsuccesful it has been for me. The most constructive advice I've heard here, as uninspired and unimaginative as it is - is to shoot within your known limits and that implies practice. Practice, practice, practice - however hard it may be to get practice on true "running shots".
