Wounded a running deer :-(

Same here.

BC doesn't have bucks jumping out in front of you, begging to be shot. Lot's of tag soup gets made in BC, and often it is "meat hunters" making it.

So don't shoot a deer on day one, unless it's the one you want...And you don't have to get drunk the rest of the week.:dancingbanana:

So everyone in the camp should just wait till the last day & shoot BIG BUCKS :runaway:
Besides I don't drink much anymore :(

For you, it's more important to fill tags. Filling tags isn't my prime motivation. I like to hunt.;)

Yes it's more important to fill tags,
course you gotta hunt for 2 weeks to do it :D

You took 2 weeks off work for 2 years & happy to not get some venny!
Sounds like a good experience :p
My family would be happier eating a small one ;)

I hunted for 19 days one year, 12 the next and 7 this last year, never shot a ram. I'd say my costs are about $5000 for that.

I would have preffered to shoot one, but the "experience" was worth way more than sitting in a blind every year filling deer tags...

It's all how you look at it.

No, youmigth see a big buck on day one!:)

I htink peopel should do what they want. If you want to fill tags, do it. If you want to hold out for a big one, do it...Neither are wrong.

But with the party hunting system, everyone in camp can continue to hunt, until all the tags are gone. We can have ten men in the bush, with only one tag left for example.
(That would be a hassle, and it's never come to that but it could be done.)

One year one of our regular partners could not go on our annual elk/deer trip,so another friend that has been asking to go for years, took his place. He shot the first deer that he had a tag for, then he pestered us to shoot every legal deer that we saw to fill our tags. The only thing that seemed important to him,was filling as many tags as possible, and his pestering soon became very annoying. We ended up killing an elk,a moose,a whitetail and four mule deer between four of us,but we did leave deer tags unfilled that could have been filled. On the way home,he was happy about having his share of meat, but he grumbled that we could have filled more tags.In the end,he did get a fair amount of meat, but it was the last time that he was allowed to hunt with us.We hunt because we enjoy hunting, and we do enjoy the meat, but the meat is not our priority.

Exactly the same for me...

I could have tagged out in my area a number of times already.(2 deer allowed in this WMU , and then gone to hunt the neighboring one, but I have only shot one deer, and I almost didn't shoot him.

In fact, I coudl have finished the season in 30 minutes last week. Spotted 2 bucks and a doe, stalked to within 80 yards, had one 2 pt walk RIGHT UP to me...

I could have easily shot 2 pt at 20 yards, reloaded and downed the 3 pt that hung back at 80.....

But that's not so much fun, and I still get to hunt another 4 days here, and the next unit over until Dec 10!!:dancingbanana:

I generally pass up 20 to 50 bucks in a season(and hundreds of does),and some years I don't even fill a deer tag, unless I see a special buck that I really want to take.Tagging out on a meat deer means giving up my chance at a true trophy, and I like to keep that possibility open as long as possible.I have also passed legal bighorn rams, because they weren't larger than the one already on my wall.I have gone home with no buck or ram more than once, but I didn't regret not pulling the trigger on a lesser animal.

You got it made!
Many a hunter who hunts their ass off may not,and some have have not seen deer here during the season in years.

This is where we have it made!
You can take a meat deer here on the first if you so choose, and it doesn't change your chances of getting a trophy later in the season.

Some make it sound like we just sit in a blind, and fill tags here. Not sure where this misconception came from? The truth is most of us hunt our asses off putting on many miles in a season.I for on can't sit in one spot any longer than an hour,or more.I a the first on out of camp, and last one in.And I don't shoot everything I see,I tend to pass up does, and fawns waiting to see if there is a buck in tow.

Actually if we want extra meat,we take an antlerless mule deer,or use a supplementary whitetail tag to take an antlerless whitetail, but I prefer to eat elk or moose, and usually don't need to take deer to have enough meat.We usually make sausage or jerky out of our deer, and take steaks and roasts from our elk and moose.
Many people that hunt the same area as myself only see a fraction of the game that we do,because I often take several weeks of vacation to hunt, while they usually hunt for a week or only on weekends. We see so many deer because we spend the extra time hunting. And if you hold out for a 150+ plus buck, your odds are not that great of filling a tag.

Meat is not a priority but you got an elk, a moose, a whitetail, & 4 mules between 4 guys
So tell me, it was a trophy Elk, trophy moose, 4 trophy muleys & a trophy whitetail... right ;)

well thats the difference between the West and East if we pass up the first one we see here the chances of seeing another are pretty slim.....I wish I could pass up that many deer I saw 35 deer while hunting this year so far and none have been "trophys" only Doe's, Fawn's and spikes....if your holding out for a trophy in Ontario you could go years with nothing but an unfilled tag and empty freezer.

It's not a east-west thing, it must be more of a region thing. I have deer hunted somewhere around 40 years & never seen more than 10 deer MAX in one season in 2 weeks, with an average much more likely to be in the 3 range with 1 or maybe 2 presenting a shot!

What about pre/post season scouting? DO you see more deer then?

We see deer in the farmers fields late evening, and the roads at night. There are deer here but alot of hunting areas you can't see further than 20-50yds,so your pretty much on top of the deer before you see it.In close quarters like that the deer usually hear, smell,or see you first. It's not as easy as just going out,and filling tags. You actually work hard to get deer here.

Sounds much like where many of us coastal BC'ers hunt...Thick cover.

Wow....reason #9845 never to move to Ontario.

Because of the type of hunting we do, you don't do a lot of scouting except to confirm runway use & get a grasp of what their feeding on this year.
On the other hand, it seems the bucks are always standing around while your doing this because they can sure be scarce once the season opens! :p
