Wife called me upstairs about half hour ago and was taking pictures of a wolf about 125-150 yards off the side deck... he was standing and then laying down and alone...

When he laid down she couldn't get andy good shots and opened the door by this time I have the 24x scope out and am watching him.. he gets up and he limped off.. He'd been licking himself so I'm sure he's hurt...

Questions
  1. what do I do.. I'm assuming a hurt wolf could get aggressive and I have dogs that I have to put out (including 2 huskies)
  2. Do I call MNR or take him out myself If I need to...
  3. Are wolves in Ontario protected or is that just in algonquin or outside algonquin we are fairly close...
  4. I'm guessing a 308 would be overkill ... 243 about right?

What WMU are you in?

In some (like 59) all you need is a small game license to shoot a wolf or coyote.

In others you're supposed to get a tag...

57 Carlow Mayo (Carlow ward) NE of Bancroft..

I'll get the wife to get the pics off the camera off lunch and see about getting some of them uploaded...

He's a good size proably 120 lbs or so.. And he's Copper

I don't have a hunting license.. I wasn't looking to shoot him unless I need too... But I'll be damned if he's going to hurt my animals or family not when I have guns and ammo and the ability to use them.

Big mistake...you should have a hunting licence to cover yourself in cases like this!!

Why... The NR laws specifically state that I can protect myself and property from wildlife..

Got confirmation about that last year when I had a bear problem...Not their first choice but one of the options I'm allowed...

It's just another $100 to give to the government for nothing.. I don't hunt I have a 2 year old that see's Santa's Raindeer outside ... How do I explain my carrying up/in Bambi or Dasher's Side and turning it into steaks to him! I figure I can wait a couple years for that...

.................your not in danger. Call the professionals. Sounds like you just want to pull the trigger and are tired of shooting paper?? I say this because you don't have a hunting license.

................I carry a rifle or slugged shotgun while stream fishing with my daughter because i live in grizz and black bear country. I don't shoot a bear because its there as it hasn't posed a threat. Why are you threatened by a wounded wolf??

........The only reason i would plug it would be out of compassion for the poor animal which you haven't mentioned.

Looks like you have two choices, 1) call the MNR or 2) triple 'S' --
shoot, shovel and shut up...

I don't think he is trigger happy at all. He is concerned that a wounded animal may become a threat to his animals.

Best time to do it is when they're young. Makes it just a part of life to them. Harder to introduce them to it when they are older and have had a steady diet of Disney for 6 years. My boys (7 and 4) love Disney cartoons AND venison loin. They've been around dead deer since they could crawl and both went on duck hunting trips at age 3. I took them for a drive in the country when they were 2 and 4 and opportunity let me shoot a mulie buck just off the road. They watched me gut it and haul it back to the truck and then ate the tenderloins with me that night. No problem.

Wolf's not a problem either.

Then you sir are mistaken... I have no intention of doing anything unless the animal does something first.. If as you say I'm not in Danger.. Why call the professionals?

I was asking questions becuase of the MNR has been spouting about protecting the wolves... If they have created a closed season I need to alert them before I do anything... But I didn't know if they went through with it...Remember the options I spoke of earlier...

Simply that and concern that a lone wounded animal is likely to be more unpredictable and depending on how hurt he is could become a danger to my dogs or Son...

PS if you are out fishing and a bear comes out and grabs your daughter and you shoot it. Is that hunting? Then why would you need a hunting license... I don't have a hunting license becuase I don't need one... If was going to take advantage of the meat or the sport I would have one.. But I can't hunt deer becuase of the aforementioned 2 year old and the mentality of certain government agencies that I'm dealing with that cannot be named without violating a confidentiality order. And I don't need one to protect me and mine... I

I didn't start this thread to be told what I thought or to have my ethics questioned... I should have probably been more clear as to what I was looking for...

I intend to expose him to it as soon as I can... But for reasons I can't get into (I have in the past and have been warned that it violated a confidentiallity agreement) certain provincial government agencies don't believe that hunting is appropriate for children to see or participate in... They have put me through the ringer becuase I own guns and becuase I reload... It's not been a wonderful couple of months...

Actually I can call the MNR after the fact if it attacks or threatens to attack and there is no other option.. Called the MNR already and wandered around the menus for 15 minutes before being allowed to leave a message.. If it's same as the bear stuff they'll get back to me in a couple days give me the options and tell me to call back when and if something happens...

MNR in your area are slow to respond for sure.Usually when its too late to help or do anything about a crime. But are sure to hastle people over nothing.A fella I know was stopped and asked four times the same day to see his licence while bird hunting by the same warden.Where are they when you need them?

................uhhhhh to let them know their is a wounded animal that "could" pose a threat??

..................I think i understand your plight.

Please put the animal out of its misery. Either LEO or animal control or you personally. .308 isn't grossly overpowered for wolves, .243 should be fine too.

If you are referring to the MNR as professionals you didn't know that the Bancroft branch was a training branch and most of the kids don't know much..

I've called them and let them know... Went out to see if there was a blood trail and there was.. So he may pass of have help tonight...
