If you stop all calf hunting, you may as well stop all cow hunting because they could have a calf and if they go down, the calf is likely to die. At least that’s the logic I was told was behind the policy.
Giving everyone a calf tag by default always seemed odd to me.
It never made sense to me in ON to start the calf season 2 weeks after adult rifle season. How many calf/cow combos could have been taken instead of taking a cow and leaving the calf to fend for itself, which has been done. Just coming back from north of Longlac with all the huge wolf tracks we saw, any chance of orphaned calf survival would probably be close to nil. Most of the locals said they would burn a cow tag on a calf first.
