went out today to see if there were any ducks in the ponds before they freeze up but it turns out they were all frozen already except 1 pond had a spot about 15x15 that was open water. in that open water was the wood duck that i shot a month ago and couldnt find:eek: it was actually hit pretty good with steel BB's. 5-6 in the breast and a broken wing.

blew its head off today with the 870 and i feel like #### because it couldnt fly and was like that for a month but im glad that it still didnt goto waste.

One tough bird indeed. Just fate that it was there waiting for you to finish what you started out doing in the first place.

When she all freezes up here at the end of October in Manitoba our wetlands are full of injured waterfowl desperately trying to keep a bit of water open. Horned and Snowy owls, eagles and foxes have a field day. Guess nothing goes to waste in the end but a lingering death is not what ethical sportsmen/women want. Just a testament to the fact that steel is not a ballistic material.

Bahahaha!!!!

i spent 45mins to an hour after i shot it trying to find it but after it hit the water it dove under and that was the last i saw it until today.

it was still feeding really well and would have been ok if it werent for that 1 pellet breaking its wing:(

gotta love steelshot, eh?

at about 35 yards the steel BB's that hit the breast wouldnt even penetrate a little wood ducks breast into the vitals:rolleyes: ive used these shells to kill quite a few geese and ducks so maybe this one was just a dud? winchester xpert 3 1/2" BB. 1 3/8 oz i believe.

hell 5-6 weeks ago i shot a squirell that wa son the side of a tree at about 25-30 yards with my 12g with modified choke loaded with 1oz steel #4's. squirell wasnt moving and there was absolutly nothing in the way and the bugger ran off like nothing happened:mad: could tell by the pattern on the tree he was centered in the pattern too.

i wonder how much the percentage of wounded waterfowl has rose since the non toxic crap came into effect?

Has anybody here tried Bismuth.....I know its really expensive but I find it does a better job at taking down the target than steel

Bismuth shoots much like lead but ya have to give up your first born to buy a box of the stuff... 10 rounds that is. With raw mineral prices hitting new all time highs each day, don't expect the price to drop any time soon. Plain old evil lead is at 80 cents a pound! In my opinion the grand sport of duck shooting was over once lead was outlawed. Likely a whole new generation of waterfowl hunters that have never fired a lead round. They will never know the way 1 1/4 oz. of lead #5's would drop mallards at 40 yards! Guess I'll take my Geritol now and turn the TV on to another episode of The Golden Girls!
