WOW Ruger Mark III breakdown not so easy

Hi Everyone,

I just cleaned my ruger mark III target for the first time and wow is it ever tight. I had to hit the barrel many many times and fairly hard with a rubber mallet to get it to come off is this normal? Other then that up until the mainspring but after watching a video on YouTube it became clear what I was doing wrong.

When new. Yes. Word of advice is to deburr the hole the main spring pin goes into(as in the main pin to disassemble the gun). Take some fine grit sand paper and round off the edges on both the inside and outside where you can. Ya it takes the bluing off but it's that or it bites on the pin making your life ever so enjoyable when trying to get it in or out.

Second word of advice. Brownells, MKII accurizing kit($99.99), MKII hammer bushing($8), and a speedloader ($10). Houge grips are also nice ($20). That's two orders worth of stuff to stay under the $100 export limitation from the US and makes the MK III one hell of an awesome pistol.
 
It gets easier after a couple times.

It also becomes much easier as far as the technique goes.

That said I sold my 22/45 because all that hammering to get the upper and lower apart and back together made me lose confidence in the plastic lower. Just didn't sit well with me.

If I was doing it again I'd be going with the MKIII Hunter. ;)

How much did you shoot before cleaning? How bad was the dirt inside?
 
After a while it gets much easier. I have the Mark II 22/45 and once I pull the pin, which comes out very easily, I can easily pull it apart with my hands, no hitting required.

I save the better YouTube videos that have to do with firearms assembly'disassembly and cleaning. I just don't do it enough that it comes easy - especially with the Ruger pistol.
 
Haha I see others have had fun as well. Plan to take it to the range tonight and put several hundred rounds through it. Hopefully I did not accidentally hit the sites :).

Everyone might get a good laugh with this. As I was hitting it I decided to follow the way ruger says and put it on a table and hit down. I did this forgetting I was on a ikea table and put a hole through the table.

I stood on an Ikea table top once, also not a good idea
 
There are some good video's on disassembling and back on the web, Ruger.com has video's as well. I saw one video where a Mark III was ruined by someone, took it apart and wrecked it seemingly out of frustration. I think he took apart completely and broke it.
 
Not to worry as u are not the first to have problems. I have seen guys come back to the retailer with a bag full of parts, looking rather sheepish. As usual they disassembled without reading carefully first and ran into a world of problems. If you dont hold it at the right angle on reassembly not all the pieces align as they are meant to and altho it goes back together, it will no function. Thankfully there are some excellent vids on YouTube now and even Ruger has got smart and prepared their own videos. All are extremely helpful compared to the old written manual instructions..

Ya I got hung up in one or two spots but but the videos got me through them. The main issue I had was taken off the barrel. Going to the range to tonight will see how much easier it comes off after tonight. Hopefully I put it back together correctly :)

One thing that concerns me is that I was told never to dry fire a rimfire. During the cleaning process you need to dry fire several times. Is this an issue?

There are quite a few addressing the re-assembly. Each one of them
touches on a minute detail that some of the others failed to point out
or clarify. Taking a bit from this video and a bit from that video etc....,
helps getting the full picture.
If you use the Volquartsen accurizing kit with the Mark II Bushing to defeat the
magazine safety, disassembly and reassembly will be a lot faster when you
do not have to put the magazine IN, take it OUT, put it IN, take it OUT
amid doing contortions and praying to the Gods of springs (metal not water)
in the name of Ruger, The gun and the ^%*Up.
 
Hey Everyone,

So made it out to the range today and put about 300 rounds through it. I noticed the 555 pack of winchester was kinda all over the place not terribly bad but not good either. I then tried the CCI blazers and the grouping had been much better. Only had one failure to feed the entire time. What is considered a good grouping at 10 yards? I was able to get on average 4-6 out of 10 within 1.5" and the rest under 3" and better with the CCI blazer.

Got it home and the first wack and the barrel came off. Cleaned it and did not need to look at the videos to put it back.

Two questions. First should I use a silicone rag at the end? Second should I leave a very light layer of Lube on the outside? I am using Mpro 7 cleaner and oil.

Not trying to be difficult here, but there's no need to tear it apart and clean it. If you feel you must clean it, you can do so without disassembling it, but that's my whole point- it's unnecessary. Clean it when it begins jamming on you, or the accuracy drops off noticeably, but otherwise- leave it alone. I don't recall when I last cleaned my Mk. 1, and it runs flawlessly.
Most people overclean their firearms.
 
Ya the only reason I cleaned it is to get use to doing it and removing the initial gunk. Going to not do it next time unless I store it for a while.

Next week will be cleaning and taking out the HK 45 :)
