WSM vs RSAUM

I was just looking at the listing of new firearms on P&D website and I see Remington M-700's chambered in the Winchester Short Mags but no Rem M-700's chambered for any Remington Short-Action Ultra Mags.

When even Remington is dropping the RSAUM to chamber the WSM I think we can officially declare that WSM has knocked off the RSAUM!!

And I think this is a good thing...

Do you!?

Yes, they were horribly redundant. And, I'm glad the one I went with a couple years ago won out ;)

I don't know if it's a good thing. In my oppinion if a manufacturer produces a new cartridge and it eventually takes a dump on them it's a hit to thier bottom line, and that's not good in the firearms community as everybody is "underfire" at all times by the anti's. It just makes it tougher for them to continue on the way they previously did. I don't have a preference over the Rem. or Win. short mag cartridges, although I've never owned a RSAUM, but do own a 300 WSM. If they do drop them completely, what happens to the guys that already have the Rem. chamberings? It just makes things tougher for them to find brass, or worse yet factory ammo. As far as I'm concerened it would be nice to see them both continue making their respective cartridges.

"...wouldn't worry about ammo or components..." You should. Manufacturers tend to stop making brass and ammo for cartridges their marketing wallahs decide to drop. If you have any RSAUM, go buy 500 cases now. Assuming you can find any.

That wasn't my experience with the 264 Win Mag. I got a letter from the Vice-President Marketing of Winchester, before I bought my Win 70, that "the 264 magnum was a well researched caliber that suited a large market of western elk hunters", and he "could not forsee its abandonment". Three years later the 264 was gone from the Winchester line and another year after that they stopped making ammo. Only Remington made ammunition for the 264 mag for many years after that.

But the good thing is, this was what originally got me into reloading - and that is a good thing!!! :D

Unfortunately, the writing was already on the wall from last season for the RSAUM.

If you own one of these rifles, get brass and ammo now. The volume of rifles sold is relatively low and there is little interest in the target shooting or military world to keep components flowing.

This case is also unique with no other easy way to wildcat. Converting WSM brass wouldn't be my idea of fun as the base dimensions are different enough to cause headaches.

Why? Seriously..."A good thing?" Why the #### would you care?

Is it because you want to, in some way, get gratification knowing that a fellow gun owner got shafted because he bought a rifle? Or do you want to stand on a soapbox and "na-na-na-na-naaaaaaaa-naaaa" like a friggin 6 yr. old because of some early prediction of the cartridges demise that you made? I mean seriously dude.....How, in your little world, is the demise of a cartridge...ANY cartridge....A "good" thing?

Sound like a goddamn liberal..."AR-15's are restricted now....and thats a GOOD thing!"

Give your friggin head a shake!

^ Wrong Way FWIW I believe the WSM is a slightly better cartridge across the board compared to the SAUMs similar offerings, so it makes sense to see one fall. In pretty much every caliber the WSM allows slightly more powder, velocity etc...

Reality is you ought to be happy about the success of the WSMs!! Looks like they will be around long term.

The RUMs are faring pretty well too, so out of these new caliber proliferations we ended up with 2 new lineups of calibers. Not too bad really.

I happen to have bought a few caliber offerings:

.17 HMR. That thing is a sweet like rimfire!! CZ-452 varmint barrel. Great rifle!

.480 Ruger. It's a Ruger SRH. It's a man's handgun!! Do you have one of those? I recommend it!! :)

.458 Lott. Sure it's been around since 1970 or so but is only finally getting commercial success with Ruger and Brno chambering rifles for it. You should buy one...
Mine is a converted .458WM CZ-550.

So there you go. I don't hate anything that makes sense and I am always ready to spend my money on new products and I do. :)

Anyway the proof is in the fact that Remington is now chambering the WSM and dropping the RSAUM. If that's a problem call Remington... :p

You are completely dancing around the issue....whats the matter....afraid you're gonna look like an idiot? Too late.

The fact of the matter is I AM happy with the WSM's success....why the hell wouldn't I be? If it lures just one new shooter into the sport, or more humanely kills one animal, it's a GOOD thing! I for one, would never buy a .50 BMG, but it would be a frosty day in hell before I thought it was, as you put it, "A good thing" that the guys who DO have them cant get ammo/components.

Now, please justify your statement, and PLEASE tell me how the SAUM's being diminished is in ANY WAY...." A good thing". I'm sure all the members here that own one of the remington short mags would LOVE to hear why it's a good thing they won't be able to buy ammo (in your opinion)

I sincerely look forward to your reply.

As one who has had some extensive wildcat experience with both cases, I can tell you that the SAUM is actually a better cartridge in 6.5 caliber.
However, both are good cartridges in the proper actions.
I DGARA about short versus long BTW, as I am a single shot looney!!:D

Ive owned both SAUMs, the 7saum I have extensive experience loading for, the 300, not so much (it was a gross Savage).

they are both great cartridges and every bit as good as the WSM, despite coming up 50 fps slower than their competition.

Its a shame Remington didnt market them as well as Browning/Winchester did. Advertising sells more guns than anything else.

Nugget ain't gonna be happy about this!

Would one be able to simply run a WSM reamer into a SAUM chamber and carry on as long as the WSM doesn't bit the big one?

Although I am not a fan of the new whiz bang stuff it is indeed sad to see one die in short order like this. The same thing has happened in the past.
Correct me if I'm wrong but the 6mm Rem was destined for death when it first came out as a 244 with a bad rate of twist. Even by renaming it and changing the barrel spec it only got limited success. Even the 350 Rem Mag seems to have missed digging it's claws very deep into the publics gun safe's.
It is survival of the fittest, now more than ever. It must be any engineers nightmare to come up with something that is genuinely new.

The rediculous prices are pushing these toys out of alot of peoples reach, myslef included. I am stuck trying to find used guns for a decent price and in good shape, not an easy task. This cannot help sales either.

Some of you fellas need to check your meds... your blood pressure is way too high.
This is a chat line not the Spanish Inquisition.
Winchester and Remington both make limited runs of many of there long ago abandoned cartridges every few years.... I seriously doubt that there will be much difficulty getting components for the RSAUM's in the foreseeable future.
But hey if I'm wrong you can let me know... hows that.

Hell! After Rick Jamison wins his law suit against Winchester the RSAUM may well end up being the winner! ;) LoL (Ruger for example is NOT currently chambering any more rifle for the WSM until the legal action is completed.)

Red, it's not the issue of "if or when" components become available.......my issue is some dumb a$$ taking pleasure in what will amount to someone elses (a fellow Gunnut's no less) misery. United we stand, blah blah blah....
I think you are off side W/W... I don't read anything in anyones posts here that is taking pleasure in anyone else's misery?
Demonicals post did not strike me as being derogatory, he was simply stating a fact and giving his opinion.
I also think that it is a good thing that Remington is offering the WSM's... does that make me a dumb-ass too.;)

Expressing an opinion does not make a person look like an idiot. It's a free country pinhead.

How's that?

IMHO the SAUM going out is a good thing. Get over it.
