Okay so I know the WSM topic has been beaten to death!d:h: But a buddy of mine who is not overly internet savy asked which of the three WSMs are the most popular as far as factory ammo and rifle sales are concerned. He lives out west and I said I thought it would #1-300WSM, #2-7mmWSM, #3-270WSM, but he went to Wholesale in Saskatoon and they said #1 was the 270WSM, then the 300 and then the 7mm. WTF? Am I out to lunch here? I am wondering what would be the best seller, and availability of ammo in major centers.

Chime in guys!

I'd say the 300WSM is the most popular, followed closely by the .270WSM. The 7mm WSM isn't even a contender, but there is still factory ammo available, and not too hard to find either. Not many rifle-makers are chambering their guns in that though.

I'm not surprised that they said the 270 WSM was the best seller since it's an improvement, velocity / power wise over the original 270 Win. No doubt the 300 WSM is a good cartridge, but since it doesn't really do anything all that much different than other 300 magnums on the market, it's got more competition with buyers.

I would say it depends on where you take the poll, probably 270 wsm on the praire's 300wsm in b.c.(except for goat.) but I have a 325wsm which by looking at the classifieds and the people I've taked to it's more popular than the 7mmwsm.If I ever got another it would be the 270 wsm.But I love my 325.

If someone owns a .300 WSM, and wishes a small calibre, the .270 WSM would be the obvious choice. Someone considering buying "one" rifle then My recommendattion would be the 7mm version because there is only .007" difference between the .270 (.277) and the 7mm (.284).

:agree:

.325 WSM should have remained a brainfart.

Okay, I stand corrected! I told my buddy to forget the 270 WSM and go with the 7mm. I would have sworn on my grandma's grave the 270 was not legit, but maybe that is my own personal distain for the 270 caliber? :D

Thanks guys!

Do yourself one better and tell him to go with the 300wsm...He wont regret it!!
But he may regret going with the 7mmwsm someday, unless of course he reloads.

270wsm all the way. the 270wsm will be perfect for 98% of the pop of hunted game animals.

X1000 on the brainfart of the 325wsm. what gap did this fill? it made a gap IN ONES WALLET BAHAA

300wsm alright but between the 270wsm and 300 wont notice the diff other then recoil so 270wsm it is.

this is my opinion

If he doesn't reload, he's better off with the .300wsm or the .270wsm.

The 2 of you on the first page who complimented the 7mm WSM should have just hit the back button, because of what you did, he's got his friend wasting money. I hope Stevens makes a model 200 in this caliber:eek:.

This is the same thing that happened years ago. Winchester brought out the 458win mag, the 264win mag, the 338win mag, and a little later on the 300win mag. The 264 exploded onto the market, then died as fast as it started. The 458 was the darling of those that wanted to go after the big stuff, but gained a bad rep (weather it was deserved or not) regarding unmet velocity figures, and ammo going bad due to overly compressed powder. The survivers of the clan are the 300, and 338.
The 270 fills a nich that was only filled by the weatherby (a propiatary cartridge that has never really gone mainstream). There always seems to be room for yet another 308dia cartridge. The 7mm never really started, and is basically gone, and I think the 325 was dead as soon as it left the stall; it's just twitching at this time.

The .270 WSM is the only one that improved with more than 3 digits in both velocity and energy. Also, reloading is a big bonus in my experience; the necks of the cases don't stretch nearly as much as they seemed to in the standard long action .270. As far as the rest go, I still haven't felt the need to replace my .300 wm or 7mm rem. with a short mag.

I did however replace my .270 win with the .270 wsm because when I handload in 180 grain bullets, they chamber a lot better in the short mag, than they did in my standard long action Rem. 700. That fact right there makes it more versatile for me, than my 7mm mag. ever was.

To each their own, though.
