WT build .375H&H, best way of doing so on a small budget?

Hello

I want to build a .375H&H... what would be the best way of doing so on a students budget?

Is it possible to use a Husqvarna M96 barreled action in 8x57? Or do I have to go up to 9.3?

Really new to this stuff... so feel free to drop as advice!

having built more than a few rifles for myself and a few others I contend that there are no savings when putting a rifle together.....the deals are on the local shops rack.......a nice M70 Safari Classic with a 2-7X Leupy on top in near mint condition recently sold at the local shop for about $1200.......valuing the scope at $200,..that's a grand for a rifle that would cost at least twice as much to put together on a Mauser...

Unless you have access to someones shop, and their castoffs pile-o-parts, there is no way you can build for cheaper than buying already put together.

Classic example. I got a Sako with a Douglas barrel, nice wood, well built, finished, with scope rings, for aprox. the retail that the bare action was worth at the time. Even if the rifle had been ten years old, I was still paying less than the cost of the parts, comparing ten year old prices.
That gets nowhere near the labor for the barrel install, the woodwork, the finishing, etc.

Keep an eye on the EE, and get on good terms with your local gun sales outlets, if they deal in used and trades. Gunshows too. Learn what is worth what, carry cash, be ready to negotiate, and don't get too worked up if the guy does not want to sell...

Building it is like buying new cars off the lot. You get what YOU want. But you pay for it, too.

Get yourself a P14 or M1917 that has already been bubba'd, or tha barrel shot out. Then send it to Bevan King in Ponce Coupe for rebarreling to 375 H&H and the action worked over to allow for proper feeding. Bevan can also set you up for a scope mount of your choice.

A restocking, if necessary and you are on your way!

...any idea what Bevan would charge for this?
 
My christmas present to me was a model 70 win in 375. It came with 200 loaded rounds, two boxes of sierra 300grs, dies and 50 extra brass, high end win sling and a nice hard case for 1000. It is maybe a little steep but thats alot of ammo:D

No way that would be cheeeper than buying a used one ..... PERIOD!

BTW ..... Bevan is taking less and less work on these days. He may not do it anyways.
 
You can find new Rem 700 XCR's in .375H&H for under $1000. Save some more $$ and get a better stock down the road. And they're stainless.:)

Depends on exactly what he has to do. And yes, I know that Bevan is working towards a full retirement. However,if you find a already bubba'd P14/M1917, that all it needs is a new barrel, and work to make it feed properly, I submit that it could well be a LOT cheaper then buying a used rifle. Heck you may not even have to change the stock!

Last time I asked Bevan about a new barrel, was about a year ago, so talk to him directly. All sorts of metal costs have gone up recently, in an mind boogling manner! Remember this was a year ago.

Its not too bad if you already have your bubba action ready to go. Even with this in mind you are probably talking 700$ + with no sights or mounts on your milsurp sporter . Lots of variables......

It seems building guns and budget rarely work very well in the same sentence.

Either buy a used one or save up and get your project comleted to your satisfaction.
 
This I do. The rifle is all ready, just needs a new barrel, not even any work to get it feeding properly. I may do it yet, just need to talk to the accountant, I mean the wife!:D

PS, I know what you mean about building guns and budget, been down THAT road once!!!
 
M-70 (post '64) with very light use, flawless bore, excellent blueing and ready for scope cost me $ 695.00.

I also saw a M-70 with a heavy barrel, and an Akley Improved chamber for $ 850.00 at a gun show.

Can you build for less?
