Two weeks ago I ordered a Choate flash hider/front sight for my Mini 14 from Brownells. I called this am to find out where it was.

Seems a flash hider is on the no-no list of evil things that make a gun look baaaad. I asked at the time and was told it was not on the list.

Anybody got one to fit a series 187 - ###X Mini 14 Ranch Rifle with tapered barrel?

On the Brownell's site, they have filters available to refine your search. One that I just found out about is "Available outside USA" , which shows only the stuff you can actually order. It saves a lot of frustration.

It has to do with the manufacturer, not the fact that it is a flash hider. Some manufacturers have the proper permits to export their products and some don't.

A Flash Hider is ITAR controlled, whereas a muzzle brake is not. Go figure.

From the ITAR controlled list
Riflescopes manufactured to military specifications, and specifically designed or modified components therefor; firearm silencers and suppressors, including flash suppressors.

Sometimes the USA has rules that make Canada look golden. Sometimes...

I ordered a Samson hand guard, sights, and low pro gas block from Samson MFG. Awesome customer service. She called me next day and said the gas block could not be shipped because of my Canadian address due to patent laws????? She just sent the other items.

It is to do with the ITAR list.

NcStar flash hiders can be brought in from China, but we can't get Choate products from the US - insane! But the world is safer as a result .....

Ain't bureaucracy great?

Great idea, if they were reliable. Last time, I set the "Available outside USA" filter, found the Smith Enterprises muzzle brake I wanted, then clicked "add to cart".

Three days later I got an email informing me my order had shipped, along with a note that restricted items had been removed from the order. You guessed it, no muzzle brake.

Exactly. It doesn't work very well. Available Outside The USA >>> Smith& Alexander 1911 Mag Well, Surefire Socom Muzzle Brake and flash hiders, Novak Sights, TruGlo TFO sights...try ordering one and see what happens.

With my 580 series, I just had my front sight set back and the muzzle threaded to fit a flash hider off a Norinco CQ A M4 clone.

I'm not sure if it can be done with the older thinner walled barrels though.
