So I finally got to handle a couple of these new Zastava's, and just saw Corwin Arms new 7.62x39 rifles, and gotta shake my head.

The raised cheek weld on the Monte Carlo stocks makes the irons pretty much unusable.

Why even put them on the friggin gun in the first place? I would never use them, even as backup sights, as it is pretty much impossible to get a sight picture.

You essentially have to crank your head over sideways and jam your cheekbone into the stock to even line the damn sights up!

I have #####ed before about rifles not coming with irons, but this is even worse. These rifles cost more I'm sure as the sights ad to the cost, and in the end they are friggin useless.

I guess I am buying another CZ, or a lever because no other ####ING rifle companies can build a decent gun with irons!

FFS...

P.S. Sorry for the rant, but my wife has no idea what I am talking about so figured I would scream and yell here instead. LOL

If you lose some weight, your cheeks will suck in, and the irons will be usable. You could also learn to shoot with your head cocked to the side, holding the rifle further away. I know: hold the rifle like a pistol, and sight down the entire length. Please wear a helmet, and post the video here. I will make some popcorn and wait right here.

A strait comb stock might be better.

I only see the synthetic with the straight comb, and I was looking for wood.

I think I will just have to wait for the new CZ's to hit the Canadian market, or just build by own.

I am thinking of picking up a Ruger American to be shortened to 18 and have sights installed. Might be the best way to get what I want.

I was excited when I first saw the Zastava stutzens but was disappointed with the open sights and my face hurt from the pushing it onto the comb when trying to look through the irons... I too am waiting on a new shipment of CZ's to reach our shores.

Oh Booo Hooo. Give us a break.

How long will it take to shave off the raised cheek piece????

I have one of the Zastava MarkX Mini Mausers in 7.62x39. Good little rifle for what I paid for it and relatively accurate. Not a tack driver but cheap to shoot and very light.

If they are still using that soft wood for stocks, I would suggest you also completely glass bed the receiver area. I don't know what they use but it's almost as soft as pine.

I mounted a short 2 1/2 power Leupold on mine and it is a decent combination.

The rifle isn't expensive and the wood is soft enough to be easily modified..

OP, did you not see a pic of the rifle before you ordered it???? You mentioned your wife. Instead of making her feel bad, man up and make the stock fit you.

I never bought it.

My excitement is all that was lost in this deal.

I realize I could modify it, but like I said I am just gonna build what I want. In the end will cost the same.

Thanks for the heads up on the Zastava's.
I've been looking at them too.

I have a CZ 550 FS, and it shoulders well and the cheek weld is just about perfect on the irons for me.

So, OP, you're saying that you're pissed off because a rifle with a Monte Carlo comb also has irons, but you just can't get comfy enough to use them. You also mention that in the past you have #####ed about rifles without iron sights. If your next gun has a straight comb and irons, but doesn't give you a perfect cheek weld for scope use, will you launch a rant about that as well? Any rifle stock comb is optimal for only one sight line, and using any other height of sights is obviously going to involve a compromise. No way around it, without installing an adjustable comb.

For the record, I recently got a Zastava and find the comb very useable with the irons...not perfect, but acceptable. For a scope, which I will almost always use, it's perfect. A good compromise.

I'm curious to know how CZ has been able to achieve a stock that gives a perfect sight line for iron sights and scope use. That's amazing stuff right there. ..lol

Stop and think about it man as said it can't be done. But I don't plan on throwing my 1960s vintage Husqvarna sporter with a monte carlo stock away any time soon as it fits a scope beautifully and although I'm far from a contortionist I find the iron sights quite useable as well. Not that I plan on ever shooting anything with them. ..

^yeah but if he shaves the stock down for the perfect iron sight picture he'll have to come back and complain that it sux for scope use. Actually go for it, this thread could have legs.

Tikka makes a nice rifle with iron sights. it is bolt and only comes in a 308 or 30-06 but the sight on them are pretty cool. Go check it out on their site.
