I have come across a few of these in trades and with a shorty I recently bought. I guess the gigantic steel follower wasnt enough? Welding the baseplate on is ridiculous. Sorry for the rant but I don't like taking a Dremel to something just to clean it...

Hmm, how were they reduced to 5 rounds? Standard rivet? If it's internal, such as by simply adding a piece of plastic/wood under the follower, whoever did it may have had to weld the baseplate for it to count as a permanent alteration.

Three very different sources canam, EE and a gunshop. All are spot welded and painted black on the bottom. Otherwise they are the exact same with the big long follower on the inside.

There is no need to weld, You can block the mag with wood or steel and use a rivet on the bottom to prevent the removal of the bottom plate preventing mag disassembly.

No wood, no rivet, no plastic.
The OP mentioned that the follower had an extension on it, that prevented the magazine fron holding more than 5 rounds. The floorplate was then welded to prevent someone from getting in the magazine to clean it , change a defective the spring or a damaged follower.
Replacement followers and floorplates are available from SARCO. Springs are available from Wolfe if you mags require any .

Ya mine are the same and it sucks. There are a couple times I would have liked to take them apart, but I guess I'll get the dremel out soon. If I dremel the welds, how do you guys secure the floor plate after the fact?

I just put the floor plate back in and leave it at that. Really, what is the difference between a longer follower and a rivet?

I prefure a rivet because the long follower can bind up the spring or cause problems. I like replacing the follower and springs in the magazine I find they work allot better and are allot smoother when you do that but with a welded magazine it's allot more work to do as with a rivet you can sometimes get all the parts out with out having to do anything to it and upgrading to anti tilt followers stuff like that.

so I just got a m305 shorty. the 5/20 mag has a dented follower. I need to disassemble and the floor plate is welded. anyone try to break the welds yet?
