wtf? m14 newb

In full auto fire the muzzle will be kicking up & up and pulling your rifle butt down & down off your shoulder. The hinged plate resting on top of your shoulder will give you somewhat of a support otherwise you'll be spraying the clouds full of holes ;0

Dont use it its uncomfortable as hell. I think there is a article in this forum that tells you how to replace it with a Garand plate.

funny how many of us don't find it " uncomfortable as hell"- i've never heard barney complain about it, and i don't see how replacing it with a buttplate that us DIMENSIONALLY THE SAME and still made out of steel( less'n you get one without the door) is going to make a difference- remember, the m14 and the garand are MIRROR images of each other, save for the differences in the cartridge length, the mag capacity, and the scope mount-indeed, there are those of us that remember having to LEAVE THE PLATE, SHOULDER REST in the DOWN position as it was considered as a SHOOTING AID

Well shooting with it down is fine. I'm just saying that with the shoulder thing flipped up its not that comfortable for me to shoot at the bench. I was never in the american army in the 50's so I dont know how to use everything on the rifle in its correct way but I do enjoy the platform.

neither was i, but if there's something built into the rifle that's going to aid me in my shooting, i believe i should take advantage of it- the m14 platform is so old that ALL of the so-called "secrets" are available on line or in published form ( zediker and knudsen or however it's spelled)
the m-14 et al had long and varied career AFTER the army declared it OBSOLETE back in 63- it still serves in the navy and in specialized roles
just like you can rig a springfield type sling to actually HELP your shooting, rather than just as a way to hold your rifle on your shoulder
i'm left handed, and i shoot the thing off the bench regularly- got a harris bipod up front, and that plate helps me snuggle the rifle butt right into the "socket" where it's supposed to be

Imagine you are in a fire fight, laying prone with the foreend supported and you are doing mag changes and working the bolt handle....that shoulder thingy would help keep the rifle anchored on you shoulder while you release your strong hand and work the action.

I miss that hinge. Used it all the time until I changed the stock.
Made a huge difference in my accuracy as I could just lean on it and keep the rifle stable.

The hinged part works best in the prone position or if you are leaning over something to shoot like the hood of a truck or car. It rests on the shoulder and the back muscle and keeps the stock in place while operating the firearm in full auto.
