Alberta man fined for killing Yukon grizzly

A 45-year-old Alberta man who bragged on the internet about killing a Yukon grizzly bear has been fined $4,000 for illegal hunting.

Richard Graves, of Wetaskiwin, pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced in a Whitehorse court Monday.

Graves came to the Yukon last May to hunt for a grizzly with Yukoner David Odo, a man he had met on a website called Canadian Gun Nutz, the court was told in an agreed statement of facts.

Odo received a special permit to guide Graves on a hunt in the Takhini area north of Whitehorse.

After two weeks with no success, the pair, along with another Yukoner, Robert Russel, travelled to an area south of Haines Junction, far from the approved hunting location, where Graves had better luck.

The next day they posted a photo of Graves with his bear trophy along with a story about the hunt on the Canadian Gun Nutz website.


The area where they shot the bear is the exclusive hunting area of Devilhole Outfitters. A hunt with Devilhole would cost about $25,000, the court was told.

When questioned by officials after the hunt where the bear had been killed, they lied, saying it was near Takhini Crossing where they had permission to hunt.

The $4,000 fine includes a $500 trophy fee and a $2,000 rifle that was confiscated when Graves was charged.

Graves has also been banned from hunting in the Yukon for seven years.

Russel has already been fined $1,500 for his part in the hunt. Odo is scheduled to go to trial in March.
 
They knew what they were doing it was their own fault. Glad he couldnt keep his mouth shut. How does one report him anyways?
 
It sounds like what they did was illegal and they got caught at it.

Is that not the way the law is designed to work?

It is sad that they were/are Gunnutz members but I am sure they are not the only members that have broken the law.
 
This brings up another question we need to ponder. Should outfitters have exclusive rights to huge chunks of wilderness? If you and I have to share our spots with the general public, why shouldn't the outfitters?

In Africa the big outfits control so much of the top game hunting areas that they plan to change their rules, and the big outfits will soon have to bid annually on the blocks they wish to hunt. Even there however, a local is not prevented from hunting those same blocks.

In the Yukon situation, the guys were not poaching, they had valid hunting licenses. They ended up in a road accessible area which was closed to the public, not for any reason pertaining to game management, but because it was handed over to an outfitter. If you are going to be charged $25K for a hunt, at least you should have to fly into the camp. In a place as vast as the Yukon, why are road accessible hunting areas not available to everyone?

Not quite, a resident can, but in certain Provinces, concerning outfitters, allotments are given for perscribed areas.
A resident can hunt there, but a non resident needs to hunt with the guide who has the allotment for the area.
That is not the whole tamale, but an overview.....

No outfitter in the Yukon has exclusive rights to game animals. All Yukon residents are allowed to hunt in outfitters areas. We are not allowed to guide a non resident there. Pretty simple, no conspiracy theory thoughts required.:rolleyes:
Three were caught doing a criminal act...........poaching/illegal possesion of wildlife/ etc. Two have been convicted and the third has yet to go to court.

I stand corrected.

I understand that a Yukon resident can guide a nonresident for species other than sheep and grizzly. Does this hold true in outfitter areas?
 
Guiding for sheep is Verboten!
Guiding for bear (grizzly or Black) only allowed in bear reduction zones!
Guiding for other game animals (Moose,Caribou,etc) Unknown by me, would have to check the game regs. Will advise as soon as I find out.

Okay, firstly I am not defending or minimalizing my actions here, just want to dispell a few mistaken "facts". Pickles thinks he has inside details, but he knows absolutley nothing. He has had a hate on for me for the past 9 months and taken pokes at me for every little thing I did, be it putting two sale posts in the EE at the same time before asking to have them combined or whatever. He used to be a friend of a friend and came to my place occasionally and I even did some free work for him. He got a real grudge and hate for me by coincidence right around the time he started to see and then live with a woman I had a long history with from years past and please I don't want to get into that for her sake, not his. Say jealous grudge!
I never had the class "C" guide license for Richard's hunt. Richard and I had planned to hunt together the spring past and he came here based on that. The day Richard arrived here which was Mother's day 2006, my mom suddenly and unexpectedly passed away on the east coast. Obviously I wasn't going hunting. Another CGNer was to come on the hunt with us. Him along with a friend of mine were going to continue the hunt in my abcense as I was going to the east coast for my mom right away. I left before they went on the hunt. The other CGNer that was to go, backed out because he had a bad feeling or whatever reason, I don't know, I wasn't there and we didn't speak again. Richard much to his credit never pushed to continue the hunt, he offered right away to "get right back in his truck and head home". But the others were still saying they would take him out. My friend got the guide permit and they went out. This was while I was gone so I know little after that.
I returned about ten days later from the east coast. They were out and hunting but had not got a bear yet. They went out yet again and this is where the trouble happened. And I do not know all the details and the guide is taking it to trial from there and I cannot say more beyond that. Especially at this time.
I did not plead guilty to illegal hunting, I would not plead guilty to being aparty to illegal hunting. I pled guilty to being in possesion of illegal wildlife, and I did help move the bear hide later. I did not know the details and cannot say more now as it's ongoing. The guide is fighting it. I have to tell you an easy mathematical equation. $1500 is far cheaper than $4000-$6000 minimal to take a charge to trial.
When it's all done, we can go over it and I expect more will be known. You now know nearly as much as I do, you know far more than Pickles or the other CGn member that wasn't there.
I did and will take credit or blame for my actions. I am not trying to dismiss this or hide. But your authorities on the subject know nothing and are just jumping at the chance to call names and act childishly towards people they have a hate on for out of personal vendettas or whatever foolish reason. I suggest they grow up and get lives of their own. Be assured anything you say here will be taken to the authorities, do you see it past our vendetta member at all?
