WTS Musket, what is it? How much should I ask?

I came across this old beat up musket a few years back. It's in very rough shape, the cocking lever is stuck in the cocked position, the trigger doesn't move, there's a lot of rust or dirt throughout the action. The barrel is pitted, bore looks a little bit rusty. The only thing fairly decent is the wood and the metal bands. They are in ok condition with some markings still very present.

By looking at the stamp on the stock I can tell it's a Lee Enfield but that's pretty much it. I have some pictures that show what the rifle looks like but the only recognizable feature is the Lee Enfield stamp on the butt stock and a few numbers on the metal butt plate which are shown in one of the pictures below.

Should this musket be registered? Should I even sell it? What should I ask for it? I just want someone to take this rifle in that will make use of it I don't want to ask for the maximum price... Most importantly what is this? Thanks

It's an antique. It does not have to be registered. If it were a new percussion cap reproduction, it would have to be registered. As for the value, not my area of expertise.
 
Enfield, not Lee Enfield. Its the remains of an Enfield rifled musket. I suspect the lock is a replacement from a Snider Enfield, based on the hammer. The numbers on the tang are unit and rack numbers. Definitely not subject to registration. Value? Not a whole lot.
 
It might be an Enfield (not a Lee Enfield) but it's hard to tell from the pictures. If it was made before 1898 (probably is) and the bore is larger than 8.3 mm (about .34 inch), it is an antique and does not have to be registered.

As for value - it's not worth very much in that condition. It might have some value for parts, if you found someone who needed barrel bands.
 
That one's been rode hard and put away wet. Not even the parts are worth much. You might as well keep it. 0000 steel wool and some oil or a fine brass wire wheel in a bench grinder will take off most of the rust, but that will only make it suitable for hanging over a fireplace or bar.
 
I'd put it on EE, ask any price, and of course the usual "only 10 rounds through it", there's one born every minute.
 
Pattern 1853 Enfield. Depending mainly on stock being full length and not heavily gouged, $150 range. Needs T guard, swivels, major lock work, perhaps nipple, complete rear sight assy., and probably another barrel. Those parts are about $450-$600 USD perhaps ramrod/spoon add $70
on the net in the US, a bit more in Britain. Then there will still be some stock and metal work too.
No on registration, Pre 1898 muzzle loader.

Looks like a perfectly good butt plate there, and maybe some barrel bands.
Other than that, it looks like junk. Value - about $25 - $35, unless you find a buyer willing to pay more for the curiosa factor - not likely.

Where was it found ?--- May be of some Historical value which doesnt always relate to $ value.
Also , I would be putting a rod or dowell in the barrel and marking the rod at the end of the barrel when at its deepest point and comparing it on the outside in the off-chance it MAY STILL BE LOADED. At the very least put some air to the nipple and see if it blows out the muzzle.
Remember ALL guns are loaded until proven otherwise !

Hi I Agree with Winchester never assume a firearm is unloaded no matter what the age or condition.I purchased a model 1841 harpers ferry rifle years ago which was not only loaded but triple charged:eek:As for value I would say it falls into the relic category.Probably worth $150.00-200.00 max.:)Cody
 
Thanks for the advice everyone, I would also like to add that it has been sold and there's a lineup of buyers...couldn't imagine that there would be that much interest in such a beat up rifle. Hope I don't regret selling it later on :p
