WW1 on the BBC

This looks very interesting. I'll be checking out a goodly amount of it. All the programming seems to be decidedly British. I hope the CBC matches with some good Canadian content.

....for some reason the Brit's seem to honour and remember those who sacrificed everything for those they love

edit: i'd like to take a step back from a bit of a scathing comment on Canada's track record for paying tribute to our own......yes, we do.....just think we could do a way better job of it........they DIED for us

Yep, lets hope there's something here from CBC....Probably time to re-visit the BBC documentary of The Great War (Narrated by Michael Redgrave) First aired on the 50th anniversary of WW1....

If I remember I'll post up a link from youtube when I get back home, as I can't get it on a work computer.

The BBC did an excellent documentary series on the Great War that aired in 1964 for the 50th anniversary, a complete 28 episode series with interviews from all front vets as well as factory workers. They did it in conjunction with the Australian and Canadian War Museums and there's a fair bit of our content in it. I'd highly recommend it for anyone here.

Edit: Ha, Tommy beat me to it by a few minutes.

I agree 100%.....Although I'm happy to see on remembrance day our local memorial is packed with people paying their respects...WW1 is more ingrained within British Society. Whole towns lost a generation, and the cemetaries containing the many thousands are only a ferry ride away. Its right on their door step. I certainly think the geography of it plays a part, especially for us in the West.
If Vimy Ridge was a 2 hour drive away things would be different.....

excellent point

FYI, that poster is WWII, but it's great propaganda.

My issue with the CBC is that the talent for documentary filmmaking is second-to-none. There's no reason why they shouldn't use the latest techniques along with their piercing social conscience.

where's our Ken Burns ?

maybe I should do it

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place, and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below

We are the Dead, short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields

Take up our quarrel with the foe
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch, be yours to hold it high
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep though poppies grow
In Flanders fields

I know Blackadder was meant to be a comedy but the Last scene when he "went over the top" summed it all up.

:agree: I get a tear everytime I see that final scene of the Black Adder Goes Forth series.
(There were only six episodes.....Bummer!) Thanks to CD, I got mine for a long time.:)
