Hi,

It certainly appears to be a very nice pistol!

The markings inside the holster do not look period, to me.

I have to agree with you. "CDN ARMY" is very unlikely in my opinion and I've also never seen any period writing look like that, and I have seen several WWI named holsters.

Is it possible to provide a few more detailed pictures of the holster and the gun?

Thanks,
-Steve

What a great find, congrats. Lots of possibilities. Could have been left over from WWI. Lt. Irvine could have been in both wars for that matter. Could have been purchased new in WWII and then he was in a position where he almost never needed to wear it. Who knows. You should be able to track down some information on him. At least an obituary.

I tried to find info on Him...no luck so far......

Nice looking gun! Thanks for the follow up pictures.

I still suspect it was named later though. The writing is just doesn't look period at all and the "CDN ARMY" really seals it for me. I would expect to see a unit as well. Maybe it did belong to a Lieut. Irvine and his grandson added the personalization? I would be suspicious that this S&W never belonged to a WWI veteran and the name was added recently to increase the value. It just seems suspicious...

Either way, as already said it's a nice gun!

try putting some colt dominion .455 through it it'll surprise you...even more fun if you shoot a cylinder of .455 kynoch first lol!

Hi Lugercollector
I found a Irvine Alexander Mc Kenzie North He Joined in Sask as a Pte. could have become a officer. Our museum has a MkII Hand Eject with the same Holster and no Markings on the revolver with no wear. Canada bought over 12,000 MkII from S&W and was the main side arm during the First World War.
Cheers Gerry

FWIW, if you want to know its provenance, write to S&W and their historian Roy Jinks will look it up and send you a letter with the history of that specific gun. Costs something like $30 or so to get it lettered last time I did one.

Fabulous looking revolver

How does the S&W triple lock compare to the Colt New Service revolver, i always like the look of the S&W, i believe the RCMP were armed with the Colt New Service, until the 50's, when they went to the .38 S&W
