Just going by that picture it looks like there was just a slow shutter speed on the camera and the image blurred. Still, they did throw up a hell of a lot of fire.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in WWII in the Pacific.

And a side note: if the USN had put armoured flight decks on their carriers like the RN did, they would have lost fewer.

Excellent selection of photos. You picked some of my favorites, the Pacific was a brutal theatre of operations.
