WWI rifle

It look like this? http://www.angelfire.com/nh/milarm/ross05.html
Still in full military configuration? Condition? Its condition and whether or not it's original affects its value. Not many of 'em left in military configuration. Hard to evaluate one without seeing it.
Seems to me the 1905 model was the one that the bolt could be put in incorrectly and come out into the shooter's head upon firing. Not entirely sure though.

Depends on if it has been turned into a sporter or if it is in the original military configuration. A quick way to tell if it is a Ross rifle is to look at the left receiver wall and see if it is made in Quebec.

It says Quebec on the receiver, and it looks like the same type of gun that was in the link. However, as usual the military stock has been replaced with a sporter style stock. I was just curious about what it's worth... he would never sell it anyway... the gun belonged to his grandfather, and he's pretty sure his great grandfather had it before him. The gun still shoots perfect... his grandfather used it until he stopped hunting.

There's a factory sporter 1905 for sale on the EE right now, and a factory sporter might be what your friend has - there were different grades of sporters produced. If there's a serial number stamped in the metal it's a factory sporter.

Another way to figure out which model is to see if it's chambered in .303 or .280 as the factory sporters came in both calibres.

Look at the left side of the breech of the barrel. If there is a serial number stamped there with numerals about 1/16" high it is a factory sporter.
