WWII German Submarine handheld compass

The sub's hull form seems to be a little advanced for 1939 as well. I wonder if a compass would work in a titanium hull?

Titanium hulls are unique to the Alfa class Soviet boats.

Some compasses WILL work in a pressure hull, but not a rinky-dink one like that. You need a precision instrument. The hulls are de-permed and are magnetic interference-minimized.

Typically, you do not navigate with a hand-held compass. You get a navigation fix on the surface and navigate below-water (dived) with a gyro-compass or a modern ring-laser gyroscope. It's called an inertial navigation system.

Good description of how a German sub operated in the book Das Boot, the Boat in English. :D Way more so than the movie. The author actually mirrors the narrator in that he was a war reporter and accompanied a mission with a U boat. Must have been a very perceptive fellow, since he gave one of the crewmen, my name. :D

Since the OP is a bit uptight about the answers he is getting, here is a website that shows the types of Compasses that he has. Down to the "submarine" markings and the sundials, and the exact wording.

compassmuseum.com/diverstext/fakes.htm

If you go there, check out the "Nazi Fakes" section, and take your pick.

However, the Pakistan connection is wrong. MADE IN INDIA boys.

Hope he didn't pay a lot for it!

Here is a quote from the website. Pictures of various fake compasses too. There seems to be an Army Version too, so you could actually have a matched pair.

"We are frequently asked questions concerning compasses with symbols of ancient nazi Germany, typically an eagle and the cross called swaztika. On some items, the eagle has fancy feathers (see picture at left) and doesn't resemble the Third Reich's heraldic eagle with its strait feathers. Very common are also some others on which a few German names were engraved like U-Boot (submarine), LEICA (camera manufacturer), KRUPP (Steel works) and FÜHRER ("the guide", Hitler's unofficial but generally used titel).

Generally, the letters D.R.P. (see Miscellaneous/Terminology/Abbr.) are also printed for more genuineness...

The website Forum Axis History gives a detailed explanation why a certain compasss (see pics below) is a gross fake. Even the famous words Deutschland über alles (Germany above all) were changed in Alles für Deutsch[l]and (Everything for Germany) but there is a typo: the letter 'l' is missing.

All these items are worthless. The nazi symbols were only utilized on stamps and official documents, on uniforms and flags and for aircraft identification but never on tools and instruments."

I read 3 languages well enough to know that 1. Germany is misspelled. 2. No umlualt on capital U. 3. What's this about Krupp AG being the leader made part?
That is a repro.
