Hello all!

I'm new to CGN and wanted to see what the community knows about SVT-40 bayonets.

I am in possession of a high quality bayonet that I am wanting to sell. I have currently applied for EE and am awaiting reply before I can list it.

I hear that the supply of such bayonets is sparse because sources over seas are either depleted, or there are none that are being newly discovered. In fact, I was told by a gun shop owner in Ontario that before the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, the bayonets sold in Canada upwards of $1000 because of the rarity. After the wall fell, the market was saturated and the general current going price in Canada has fallen and remained stable between $150 - $350 depending on quality.

I wanted to get a quick understanding if any of you think there is interest within CGN for me to list it. It came with my SVT-40 as a package deal, but I'm sure there are collectors that would appreciate it more than me. I'd be willing to let it go for a fair price.

I've seen them sold on ebay with scabbard for $250 to $270 US from a canadian seller. There are repros due to the higher value so you have to be cautious.

I've got a couple of polish refurbs, one standard length and one long. Hadn't heard of the long version before I saw it on Corwins website. I can tell you it would take balls of steel to not run when faced with a charging soviet armed with an svt and 18 inch pig sticker. An original svt bayo would likely run to a max of $500 here.

The bayonet I have is blued and has cosmoline grease still on it. Wood is not stamped, but the metal is electro penciled with a 3 digit serial number. All others I see have 4 digits. Not sure if that means anything.

Are original non refurb bayonets all non-blued?

Someone recently sold 4 on the EE here. They all looked to be in very good condition and some of them had stamped wood / metal from what I remember. Price was around $220 and they all eventually sold but perhaps not quickly.

I picked up two last year for 150 each. One was absolutely perfect, no scratches, never been sharpened. $200 plus ?? the market is not yet there to pay that much. Perhaps in time, but not now.

I have a Russian refurb and a Polish refurb... Got them both last year and didn't pay more than $200 for either one... (can't remember exactly what I paid - just less than $200).

The source for screwing collectors (see what I did there?) currently has Russian refurb ones listed at $275 - but that's for the deep pocket impulse buy crowd who generally speaking don't know what the going rate for these things are.

If it's in good condition, and you put it on the EE with lots of pics, and ask $250 shipping included, it won't stay there long. If you ask $275, people will go to CS, because they'd rather get screwed by someone they're used to getting screwed by.

The bayo wouldn't by some chance be numbered to the rifle!? If so, you certainly don't want to separate them, sell them as a matched offering. A collector will give you enough to buy 2 new (to you) SVT's.

If it were, I wouldn't separate it. Looking online, there has only been one instance where I have come across a bayonet with matching serials to a rifle. It was listed on a US site for $2300 for the package.

SVTs are banned from import to the US, but there are no restrictions on the bayonet, iirc. What do think the chances are of finding that rifle to match the bayo?!

Perhaps that sum of money ($2300) would be justified for a legitimate vet bring back with matching bayonet but around here you're more likely to encounter $300 refurbs paired with a random $150 bayonet.

In terms of matching a bayonet up... It's needless to say that the odds are not in your favour but technically anything is possible. CanadianAR set up a Portuguese mauser/bayonet database and has successfully found a match.

Most SVT bayonets are the SVT40 version and are Polish Refurbs (questionable - I won't go into this though) or Soviet Refurb Bayos. These standard length bayos traditionally sell for the $120-250 US price point.

Bayonets that would demand more value:
- unrefurb bayo
- SVT38 14 inch length blade version (the Polish parade bayo's have a 16 inch blade)
- or have a blade that faces upwards vs. downwards when mounted on the rifle.

In the US and World markets bayos fetch premium prices as high as $350+ US for a Polish Parade bayonet on Ebay recently.
