WWII War Birds - pics and video

Here's one you won't see every day:

The Finnish VL Pyorremyrsky. You'll note some 109-looking bits.

One ever built, and it's still in Finland, lurking behind a 109 in the flying museum:

There was a fully operational B17 Flying Fortress at the Penticton airport a week and a half ago. My son and I did a walk through, amazing machine still bristling with all the 50 cal machine guns. They were doing flights with it as well however the $530 -$630 price per passenger was a bit steep for me. Beautiful restoration from the crew out of Arizona.

The Pyorremyrsky looks a lot like the Fiat G55 Centauro. Looks like a Link and other training consoles in the background of the museum pic. The 109's interesting too with the Galland hood. Maybe a late mark G.

I figure if you fitted it with retractable gear and a tail that didn't look like it was designed initially as a railway bridge, it could possibly be attractive. But as-is? Yep, fugly.

This is prettier, but the chances for a cold, miserable bath seems pretty good:

gear lowered for water landing? whats up there?

Speaking of flying boats, here's an Italian beauty - the CANT Z.501:

Say what you will about Italian's martial prowess - their design was often state-of-the-art, and with some attention paid to aesthetics:

Sadly, no survivors.

I would say that has "CANT" written all over it! Crying out for a second engine, especially given Italian reliability of the period (1930 - NOW).
