Just got back from Wyoming where I hunted Antelope and Mule Deer near Douglas. I'm not normally a big hunt report poster but this was just such a blast I had to throw a couple of photos up on here. I hunted with the owner of a 30,000-acre ranch (Tillard Ranch) and I probably won't stop grinning for a week. Drove down, and when I re-entered Canada last night I think the customs officer must have thought I was either high or slightly insane.

As you can see, the weather wasn't the greatest; lots of drizzle with a bit of actual hard rain, windy, gloomy overcast...but the hunting was terrific. The Mule Deer is my first ever, taken after crawling up a small ravine which put us at 191 yards from him in his bed. He was with two other bucks, all nice, but I just liked this guy the best. He took a .308 150gr Fusion bullet and just rolled over dead.

My Antelope wasn't my first...and won't be my last!...but he's a dandy. He was busy chasing his does around, dashing to within 100 yards at times, and then immediately charging out to 350 or more. I was resting my rifle over my backpack, waiting for him to stop in the clear, and finally got a chance at 263 yards. He reacted to the shot by dashing away for about 50 yards, then just keeled over.

Both critters were taken with my Steyr Scout in .308, a favourite rifle but not my first choice for this hunt. However, it was the only one of three that I applied for permission to import into the U.S. that the BATFE felt they could allow into the country. Pretty strange, especially considering that one of the other two that they declined was the same gun they allowed me to bring into the country two years ago for my last Antelope. Go figure.
