Just got back from Wyoming where I hunted Antelope and Mule Deer near Douglas. I'm not normally a big hunt report poster but this was just such a blast I had to throw a couple of photos up on here. I hunted with the owner of a 30,000-acre ranch (Tillard Ranch) and I probably won't stop grinning for a week. Drove down, and when I re-entered Canada last night I think the customs officer must have thought I was either high or slightly insane. :)

As you can see, the weather wasn't the greatest; lots of drizzle with a bit of actual hard rain, windy, gloomy overcast...but the hunting was terrific. The Mule Deer is my first ever, taken after crawling up a small ravine which put us at 191 yards from him in his bed. He was with two other bucks, all nice, but I just liked this guy the best. He took a .308 150gr Fusion bullet and just rolled over dead.

My Antelope wasn't my first...and won't be my last!...but he's a dandy. He was busy chasing his does around, dashing to within 100 yards at times, and then immediately charging out to 350 or more. I was resting my rifle over my backpack, waiting for him to stop in the clear, and finally got a chance at 263 yards. He reacted to the shot by dashing away for about 50 yards, then just keeled over.

Both critters were taken with my Steyr Scout in .308, a favourite rifle but not my first choice for this hunt. However, it was the only one of three that I applied for permission to import into the U.S. that the BATFE felt they could allow into the country. Pretty strange, especially considering that one of the other two that they declined was the same gun they allowed me to bring into the country two years ago for my last Antelope. Go figure.

Nice lope. Pretty country. Did a DIY antelope hunt last year with three friends. I could easily go every year if the hunting opportunities weren't so great at home.

Friendliest US state I have visited.

Congrats on the successful trip !!
What where sighted in for?
Two hundred or three hundred yrds?
First time I have read about someone using the Styer Scout in 308 no less for actual hunting.
See them from time to time, but generally just as paper punchers and not as an actual hunting rig.
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, gents, it was a wonderful trip and Wyoming is definitely one of my favourite places to hunt. After growing up hunting in southern Ontario, Wyoming is a totally unique and different hunting experience. Stark but gorgeous in the eastern parts of the state at least.

Rob, the Scout was sighted dead-on at 200 yards. I'm not a fan of long-range hunting and would much rather crawl into whites-of-their-eyes range. The topography in the areas of the state where I've hunted has been such that much of the time you are walking comfortably rather than crawling. Aside from shooting coyotes, this is the first serious use I've made of the Scout for hunting. It is one butt-ugly gun, and I've never cared for the .308 as a hunting round and I don't like detachable magazines...but this gun is light, handles beautifully, fits me well, has an outstanding trigger and just hits where I point it. I really, really wanted to use a single-shot in 7x65r for this hunt, but the BATFE said no. I can't complain about the results with the Scout.
