my friend wants to sell his 38. i can't find a model number on it? it's got a 5 inch barrel with 38 s&w ctg on it. it is the lazy & . he says it was a cop gun back in the 70's? ser. # 778**. any one know what model it could be? thanx dwayne

With that serial number it sounds like a 1905 model hand ejector in 38 s&w, thats not
the 38 s&w SPECIAL cartridge. Its too early to have a model number on it but it was later called the model 10.

I would tend to consider the voracity of his claim.
RCMP S&W handguns had a letter preceeding the serial number. My first on had a C and the second a D(when PlusP ammo use commenced.

I'm guessing when we hear back from 45atv he'll find that the barrel is actually stamped "38 S&W Special Ctg." The Model 10's I've seen have that stamped on their barrels. It's certainly confusing because .38 Spl and .38 S&W are definitely not the same cartidges--I guess what we call ".38 Special" is actually ".38 S&W Special".

It is probably a Smith & Wesson Military & Police (later called the Model 10). From your description it will be a .38 S&W not a .38 Spl. If it is an ex-police gun they almost always have some stampings and or markings indicating the police agency. Early RCMP revolvers, like the one you have, usually had an MP stamped on the wooden grips or frame or both. Because the RCMP took over from a number of Provincal Police Depts some revolvers could have markings from a number of agencies. One old M&P .38 S&W that I examined had marks from three agencies, RCMP (MP), Saskatchewan Prov. Police (S.P.P.) and British Columbia Prov. Police (BCP). I doubt it is an ex-police revolver if it does not have some markings indicating the Police agency. Look closely to find the identification marks.

I hope this helps.
