x39 for moose?

I'm trying to decide what to do with my collection, i'm thinking of selling my tikka 30-06 and mounting a scope on the cz 858 to replace the deer rifle.... I find it a bit pointless to own an expensive setup that is only used one week out of the year, no matter how sweet it is.

Now i'm wondering, I know 7.62x39 is fine for deer but what about the larger stuff? moose/elk/caribou ect... does it deliver enough energy to cleanly down a beast?


I'd hate to sell the rifle but moneys tight so i'd prefer to use one rifle for more activities... someone convince me I need the 06 :D
 
If I *had* to hunt moose with a 7.62x39, I'd use the 123gr TSX bullet.

I wouldn't willingly hunt moose with a 7.62x39, though.

Why not keep the 3006 and sell the other rifle?
 
Probably not a good idea. Its not costing you anything to have the Tikka sitting in the cabinet, and its there when you want it...

Because other rifle gets used a lot more.. I can afford to shoot it often, unlike the the buckaround 30/06.
 
There has been a lot of moose shot with a 30-30 Winchester, which has about the same ballistics as a 7.62x39....but shot placement is crucial .Range shouldn't be over long, prolly less than 200 yds.
Moose, generally, are easier to kill than a deer. Deer have a much stronger tenacity for life. I've seen moose lay down when shot in the lower front leg(not by me)to await its fate .I've seen deer hobble along on 4 shot off stumps(again not wounded by me).
If you shoot deer with that caliber you should be able to shoot moose with it . Myself I prefer a little more powerful cartridge...I've shot a lot of moose with a 280 Remington.

Ballistics isnt everything. Your forgetting that the 3030 lobs a bullet thats about 40% heavier then the standard x39 bullet.
 
I am looking forward to taking my XCR out for any big game this fall. 762X39 should be able to put a bullet through deer,bear,antelope and moose rib bone and still let air out of the lungs. I just have to be able to get it into a spot close enough for it to do its job.:cool:

While I have no data to back this up, I'd find it extremely unlikely 150gr bullets would retain the velocity and energy to kill a moose at 200 yds.

It barely gets it at 100 yds using a soft pt 123gr bullet.

I wouldnt do it at any range.
 
"...762X39..." Good enough for close range deer, but nothing larger.
"...a nice 150 gr .30 cal hunting bullet..." Too long and the wrong bullet diameter.
 
Usually ammo is the cheapest part of the set up when you compare the cost of the gun/scope, licences, vehicles and the extra gear that goes with hunting. I would keep the 3006 and try reloading since there are some starting kits that are low in dollar.

When I was a kid my two brothers and I "pushed the bush" for some of our step-father's "city slicker" friends. One doe ran out along the line of shooters and it seemed that everyone got a couple of shots off .Dad,near the end of the line , had to run her down and finish her off with a shot to the back of the head with his 30-30, as she was still trying to hobble along.
It was pretty disgusting . Needless to say we never hunted with those "hunters" again .
