X95 Charging Handle Operation and Mag Question

Hey there,

Shot my X95 yesterday again and had some issues. Hopefully these are all operator (me) type issues that can be corrected.

1. I don't know if I am not operating the charging handle right - I have always "rode" the charging handle after release. Not sure if I should just let the thing fly. Reason why I ask is because I experienced the same thing my son did two days ago with charging it and then pulling the trigger and hearing a click. Then when you try to pull the handle back to see if anything was chambered, it creates almost a jam in the feeding area. I am certain I am pulling the charging handle all the way back, since my son wasn't doing that Saturday and when I did it I had no problems on Saturday. But I experienced issues yesterday. But here's the other problem.

2. Saturday I was using C Products Defense LAR15 metal mags. Yesterday, I used brand new Magpul PMAG 5/30s (literally opened them out of the packaging yesterday). My X95 came with a C Products Defense metal 5/30 metal crimped mag. I have had zero issues with the PMAGs (G3) in my WK.

Not sure if it is a magazine compatibility issue, or charging handle operations issue. I am leaning towards it is maybe an operator issue since at the end of the day I tried pulling the charging handle back all the way and then pressing the bolt hold open switch. Loaded the mag, and then pressed the bolt close switch to charge, and it seemed to be better (this leads me to believe I shouldn't be riding that charging handle going forward but I don't know). But then again, I used different mags so it introduces an additional component that may have affected the experience.

Your experiences would be welcome.
 
Pull the charging handle and let it go.

I think sometimes or some LAR 15 mags are not locked in properly due to the length of the mag is shorter and the position of the magazine is not at a comfortable position to give it a knock at the bottom to make sure it's fully inserted.

To check if there is a round in the chamber, pull the charging handle back maybe about 1cm which is just enough to let you see if there is any round in front of the bolt carrier. After you check, release the charging handle it should be able to close properly.
 
Don't ride the X95 charging handle, let it fly. It does take some force to charge it relative to other firearms. The easiest way is to lock the bolt on an empty magazine and use the button that releases the bolt.

Like others have said , don’t baby that charging handle , when you rack it be …..manly .
Every civilian counterpart to a military rifle I’ve had gets jammed when I baby it . I had an original 858 and you had to charge it like you stole it , hard and like a boss …..they don’t respect you otherwise .

As others have said, do not ride the charging handle, that's 100% what's causing the issue. Now, here's an explanation why-

The WK has a reciprocating handle, which is fixed to the bolt carrier. If you ride it forward, you can still push forward on it and ensure the round is fully seated and the bolt is locked in battery- this is why you've likely never had this issue with the WK.

Now, the X95 has a non-reciprocating handle- all that handle can do it push the bolt carrier backwards, and then the mainspring pushes it forward again. If you ease the charging handle forward, it won't allow the carrier to gain sufficient momentum to fully chamber the cartridge, and the mainspring likely won't have enough pressure to cam the bolt head into battery at the end of travel. This compounds further because there's no way to force the bolt into battery, as the charging handle can only exert pressure backward on the carrier, never forward.

Remember- the action cycles every time you shoot it, far more violently than you could ever cause it to by hand. Don't be afraid to let the bolt slam shut, that's what it's supposed to do! :)
 
Thank you all for your input and educating me on the mechanics. I very much appreciate the information and insight. Thanks also for the explanation regarding the WK. Now it makes sense why I never had a problem with that one so just assumed that I was charging it properly. Both the WK and the X95 are new guns for me this year and it was only within the past month that I was able to start shooting both so my frame of reference for comparison is pretty limited. My background is fairly limited to .22s, PAL rated air rifles, and a pump shotgun, until recently when I added more rifles such as the WK, X95 and the PC9 that I just got yesterday. I thank you all for your helpful input and advice.
