Xbow...rifle or bow?

Side track :)

The Longbow vs Crossbow debate probably started 15 min after the crossbow was invented and since day one, bow people have been looking down on the crossbow people as somehow inferior.

I think that arguement was settled at Agincourt many years ago! :D

Well ladies and gentlemen I have to say the biggest thing that makes all the difference is with a crossbow you do not have to draw back, it is already cocked and ready to go. Even the most carful of hunters have probably been busted more times than they would like to admit drawing back a bow. when you are only 30 yards or so away from an animal that is a hell of alot of movement to try and do, while not getting busted. And for that reason they crossbow gives hunters higher sucess rate than a bow. Speed is faster, but minimal difference in the big picture, accuracy well give me a pop can at 40 yards and I'll hit it pretty much every time with my bow. That has to do with the amount of practice and I'm sure someone that practices with a crossbow can do the same.
I think they are different, but not in the same catagory as a rifle or black powder. And as for the big picture in Ontario here last time I looked there is certianly more than enough deer for everyone to enjoy!

I'm not sure I have a position on it personally...I hunt with compound bow & rifle, but I think the Alberta regs permit use of crossbow for physically disabled hunters during bow season, so they obviously feel the requirement to draw & hold is a significant factor in bowhunting.

xbow .... rifle or bow

Hi Kev , in Alberta xbows are allowed durning rifle big game season , only. Wouldn,t it make sense to allow xbow use along with recurves and compounds. Bowhunters are concerned of the incress hunting pressure and the incress harvesting of animals. Well lets see , you can buy a whitetail buck tag, mulie buck tag , whitetail doe supplementary ( 2 tags issued ) , on the draw system mullie doe tags are issued 1 to 3 tags per licence, thats for one guy. Lots of deer to gp around. My reason for xbow use durning archery season is that due to medical condition I had to hang my recurve on the wall a few years back. Xbow would let me participate in the early season. Personly I can,t see a great influx of xbow archers ,its costly to get setup, and hunters who would have been intrested in the bow season probaly have a compund bow already.

Heck, get all three. Longbow, compound and crossbow. They are all fun to shoot and each has it's place in our hunting culture.

I own a longbow and a crossbow, I have yet to shoot a compound. The crossbow is nice because it is a point and shoot type of thing. You certainly do not have to put as much practice into using it. The longbow deserves practice year round to keep your shooting form up, and you have to have a well thought out setup when hunting with it.

Its all good, enjoy our hunting oportunities.

Trying to shoulder the crossbow withought being seen is still no easy task. I say that the bows ability to be shot with less noise equals the crossbows ability to be shoulderd with less movement. They are equal, and yes crossbows are more noisy with 2216's with 100gr BH than a compound.

I think the new Bowtech Stryker looks like a pretty cool rig. Great numbers too, 425 grain bolt at 405 fps on a 175 pound draw. Supposed to be pretty quiet too.

I don't want one though. I'd rather pack my compound around. Lighter and reloads a little quicker.

I figure if it gets a guy out in the woods, how bad can that be?

Range and accuracy are pretty much on par with the rest of the pointy stick technology out there, and while I'd rather have the light weight and followup capability of a compound, I see no real reason to say that they should not be used during the archery season. There's lots of deer, and lots of bush to hunt in.

Trevj the main problem with the styker is the price, but if you can afford it im sure you wouldnt be dissapointed. $1500 might not be worth it for any bow on the other hand.

I started with a recurve bow many years ago, while I was still in school. I practiced every day, and shots even out to a hundred yards were possible (on target)
Later in life, I decided to start bow hunting. Picked up a good compound bow, and went at it.
I did not have the time to become even as good as I was when I was a kid.
It was frustrating.
I traded for a crossbow. Amazing!
It shoots like a rifle. Accuracy at 40 yards so good, you don't dare shoot more than one arrow at a bull, lest you hit the first arrow. With peep sights!
So, if like me you don't have the time to practice, it's crossbow, if you want to bow hunt.
Good luck getting crossbows legalized.
I know the Bow hunting purists can be a pain. I used to be one of them.

From what I have read online there are a fair number of crossbows available in the same price range.
I still don't want one, though.

If you want to buy a crossbow , go to ebay. Yes ebay , bought my xbow, after exchange , shipping , customs service charge for tearing up the package then using a little yellow tape in a feebale attempt to seal the package (12 bucks),to my door was 148 bucks cdn.Xbows can be shipped from the states to canada no problem as long as the xbow are longer than 32in, if I recall .My xbow is a Barnett thunderbolt , with simmons grad rectle scope, shoots great. I have owned a recurve , compound , xbow , my favorite to shoot is a toss up between the recurve and the xbow. As for ease of shooting a compound with good sights and a xbow are I beleive to be equal. You can hide behind a tree with a compound and sneak a shot alot easer than doing the same with a xbow , you need to be ,atleast with my xbow 2 ft away from anything before you shoot because a xbow is horiz. compounds are vert.
