Xbox Relieved of Service (pics)

Some cartriges used a battery to keep game saves, but most are just ROM memory which would last indefinately. My nintendo, super nintendo, N64, and game gear all still fire up and play games with no problem. Not to mention my PS1, PS2, XBOX, and XBOX360...:)

Cyclone, what is that red peice on the '64 where the memory expansion goes into?

I think that is the memory expansion? :yingyang:

It was called The Expansion Pack and was actually needed for some games. Found that out the hard way back when the N64 was new. I was the only one in my school that had the N64 AND a copy of Goldeneye when they first came out.

The Expansion Pak allows the random access memory (RAM) of the Nintendo 64 console to increase from 4 megabytes (MB) to 8 MB of contiguous main memory. With the help of an included key, the Expansion Pak fits into the slot that is below a removable panel on the top of the N64 console. Game developers can take advantage of the increased memory in several ways, including making games that are more visually appealing. The add-on was released in 1999 and contains 4 MB RDRAM, the same type of memory used inside the console itself. By increasing system memory, there is potential for enhancements to games designed with the added RAM storage in mind.

Only a few games, such as Rare's Donkey Kong 64, the single player mode of Rare's Perfect Dark, the multiplayer mode of Blizzard's Starcraft 64 and Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask required it for play.

Cool info, I have an expansion pack in mine as well, but the cover goes back on over top of it, and you can't see it from the outside. I think there must have been a few different versions of it. Sorry for the de-railing of the original post, perhaps one day I will fill my '64 full of holes with a 10/22 :)

As to the xbox scenario, I believe there have been at least 3 versions of the console since it was introduced. The original was most prone to overheating, and the next 2 were basically what they call "die shrinks" to reduce heating. I think mine is the second of 3 versions, and it has been ticking along since last january without issue. To get into the 360 vs PS3 argument can open a huge can of worms, I think they are pretty much equal in terms of graphics and games etc, but I dont know if I could give up the xbox live service.

ah i love the red ring .. i got 4 xbox's for the price of 1 ! :)

after the 4th died i went against my better judgement and got myself a 360 Elite .. havent had an issue since..

Ill be on my way to ebgames tommorow to pick up an elite. Can you transfer over your hard drives somehow ? I kind of want to keep my saved games and 300+ rockband songs without having to switch out hd's

You do know that these fatal errors are covered under special 3 year extended warranty's that Microsoft have issued. Did you call them to inquire? When mine was f**ked last year, I phoned them up, they gave me a new one no questions asked, and mine was over 3 yrs old.

Yea one of my friends told me that AFTER i blasted the #### out of it. Opps, last time i delt with xbox i pretty much had it with thier service. Waited forever for that box they send to you, so you can send it to them. ALMOST as bad of a system as this pal was, but not quite. And last but not least, im sorry for your guys entertainment i didnt blast it with a bigger gun. Its all i got FOR NOW. I should have at least used my Gf's dads 7 Mag rifle but i was not thinking clearly.

NEVER EVER SHOOT A NINTENDO! They will come back to haunt you! Well unless it's already dead then it's ok. I'm still trying to get my hands on an N64! :p

If you ever get the chance to open up the large style PS2's you'll see allot of difference. The first versions had very little in the way to heat sinks inside the case. Then you go to the next version and half the top of the PS2 under the cover is a heat sink!
