Hey guys,

Ive read a few comments on here about how you can legally use the XCR 10 round mags in Canada. I always assumed that people were using them at the range.

Maybe this question should be in legal, but I figure this is a better place.

If I was to go deer hunting with my unrestricted CSA VZ58 (.223) with the AR Magazine magwell adapter, and the XCR 10 round pistol mag, would I be breaking the law (IN YOUR OPINION)?

Libtards and their legal minefields !! f:P:

Thanks

Check your provincial hunting regs.
Actually now that you say that I think there might be a restriction of 5 rounds when you are out hunting. However, can you use those 10 round mags, say for shooting in a gravel pit, or are they restricted to the range ?

I am not familiar with Ont Hunting Regs (other than you can hunt with .223) but if it is anything like alberta, as long as you are able to use the LAR Mags off a range, but if your hunting Game, than it's restricted to 5 rounds, Just like with bird hunting how you can legally have as many rounds in a pump-action as you want, but are limited to 3 rounds for when you are hunting game birds.

I highly doubt that you can use .223 ammo to hunt big game (deer and up). Most provinces that I know of say you can't use anything smaller than .23 calibre rounds to hunt big game.

Also, all provinces/territories I know of limit you to 5 rounds in the magazine for hunting (yes, that includes Lee-Enfields)

Not NB, though we do have those stupid calibre restrictions outside of our "big game" seasons, and can't use our guns outside a range, unless we have valid hunting licences.:(

BS. It is perfectly legal to use 10 round mags for hunting in most if not all provinces. I know for a fact it is fine in BC and Ontario where I hunt. Ontario specifically states that the criminal code determines the legality of magazines for hunting with the exception of shotguns.

You guys need to stop making #### up and read your regs. There are TONNES of threads answering these questions, including responses direct from the Ontario MNR.

Legal to use a .223 and 10 round magazines for big game huitng in BC. Not sure abotu Ontario.

You won't be breaking any federal laws, so you just need to check your province to see if they have some silly magazine limit for hunting.

there is a 5 shot limit on Semi-Auto centerfires in Alberta. Lee Enfields can hold 10.

5 rds when hunting big game, 3 rds for shotguns when hunting game birds, anything else you can use 10 rd LAR mags and the like. Other Provinces may vary so please check your local regs, its easier than getting caught doing something illegal.

About the ONLY thing that bothers me about hunting in Alberta (Live here now, former BC resident) is that we are restricted to calibres of .23 and above.... :(

The .223 was good enough for Deer and black bear in BC, but apparently, these Albertan deer are built like tanks....

Just think about it... I have used my M1 Carbine in .30cal Carbine to hunt deer (it's a .30cal bullet) *Alberta legal*
From a carbine length rifle barrel .30 Carbine factory loads drive 110 grain RN bullets at a muzzle velocity of 1,990 fps. Muzzle energy is 977 ft. lbs. At 100 yards the little bullet is traveling at 1,567 fps and still has 600 ft. lbs. of energy.

... but I can't use .223.... ??? *Alberta ILLegal*
Current factory loads drive a 55 grain bullet at 3,240 fps at the muzzle. Muzzle energy is 1,282 ft. lbs. The figures for the Remington 55 grain HP Power-Lokt bullet at 200 yards are 2,352 fps and 675 ft. lbs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Still fun hunting here. Just wish i could use the Mini14, AR180B, Swiss Arms, or my .223 bolts....

Yes, Alberta is limited to 5 rounds for Semi Autos....

Ontario doesn't (or didn't) have mag limits. However, I would make sure you have some paper that clearly explains that those mags are legal. I would write your CFO and get a confirmation of legality. I would bet that 95% of cops and CO's don't know about that "loophole". You could save yourself a heap of trouble and expense.

BTW, the provincial regs I'm familiar with deal with the number of shots you have in the mag, as opposed to the capacity limits of shotguns.

I couldn't agree more. The CO in our Moose hunting area is a real di**head and I know what he would do. He has been quoted numerous times stateing "If I think you might be doing something wrong, I'll lay the charge and its up to you to convince the judge that you are innocent"

So a few days off work to go to court over 1000 km away from home you can easily beat the charge but it was kind of expensive. Sometimes its easy to win the battle but lose the war.

Have it in writeing, and just like the RCMP firearms storage and transport brochure, have a copy with you.

It's not a loophole the RCMP have approved these mags themselves and you can find the letter from them about their legallity. Questar use to have it on their site for download and it's floating around in here to. I always have a copy of it when I use mine but have never had any trouble when using 10 rounders.

it's why the word loophole was in quotes. I just couldn't think of a more appropriate term on the spot. BTW, I am 100% that if you ask anyone at the CFC or CFO's office, they will say it's a loophole that should be closed. But phoque them.
