XCR 7.62x39 reliability reports?

The more I read up on the 7.62X39 mags the more I have come to realize that they will never feed reliably they just can't handle the shape of the round properly and this is in any firearm that takes AR mags...

It's not the mags.....it's the polishing in the chamber that will make the difference. I know this first hand. Maybe if it were an AR we were talking about but when it comes to the XCR I guarantee the chamber needs polishing to make it function correctly unless of course you're not having any problems.

Terra sent me a PM with a bunch of stuff to check (thanks again camp cook). I also got an email back from "tech" at RA that included this:

"We sent a lot of 7.62x39mm rifles to Canada with a .073" to .076" gas port. Some low pressured ammo doesn't cycle with the port at that size. One can go up to .082 to .086if you use a drill bit, be careful that you don't hit the other side of the barrel."

I'm no gunsmith but If i had to guess i think this may be the culprit. Anyway, i took it to the shop i got it from, they're going to talk with wolverine and deal with it.

ah. That was my next guess. Couldn't for the life of me remember what it was changed to. If it was the first run of the Canadian 7.62s, that's most likely it.

Hrm. I have a one year old XCR. First owner. 7.62x39 out of the box. About a 1000 rounds through it now. On "4" setting it happily chucks casings about 30 feet to my right. At "1" setting it cycles, and drops them about 3 feet to my right. Heck, it cycles at "S" with no problems.

I had to trim a coil and a half from the bottom of C-products mags to make the 5th round load, and feed reliably.

Cheap Czech S&B ammo, 74 and 94 vintage (1120 and 1200 round crates).

Malfunctions wise, I had one stove pipe, and I believe a couple of FTEs (I can get the logbook out, and check). FTEs got cleared by dialing the gas setting up to "2". Still not sure what caused the single stovepipe.

Single biggest complaint is the bloody flash hider on the barrel. Barrel itself is corrosion resistant. Flash hider corrodes. I keep on meaning to drill the pin out, and take the flash hider off, and see if I can put on a detachable flash hider, but never got around to it. Second largest complaint is cleaning of the gas system/gas block. Again, what ever the heck the black finish on the gas regulator and the tube are, they are not protecting against corrosion what so ever. Honestly, why did Rob Arms bother with any sort of finishing that, if it corrodes in the 45 minutes it takes me to drive from the range home?

One time I didn't clean the rifle till the next day after the shoot, had to use a large screwdriver for torque to get the gas regulator turning and out of the gas system for cleaning.

Other then that... Reliable rifle, as long as the gas system is cleaned and relatively corrosion free (corrosion gets removed off the flash hider by the shock wave after the first shot) and as long as the entire thing is reasonably well lubricated.

WOW!
I'm jealous. I knew it was probably a crap shoot when i bought the thing.. based on what i'd read on other forums. What you have is what i was hoping for. Want to trade? :D

Gunsmith talked with RA.. they said the ideal size for the gas port is .076" to .08"...
Mine was at .068
He opened 'er up to .076 and test fired it, reports that it now runs like budda.

Now to try 'er out myself when i get a chance.

good to hear, I guess they keep all those gas dials in a bin, if one bad batch get mixed up in there, it is a nightmare try to sort them out :(

Some of the first few guns had a rough chamber and were in need of some TLC. The gas port was also at issue. You could have had an early gun with these issues. Call Wolfgang at Wolverine and he can advise you of your best course of action to correct the problem.

so whats the verdict on the corrosive ammo with these? if it is good i might pick one up... do they work well with corrosive ammo?

The latest x39 XCR seems fine. For now I shot only 50 rounds of Czek surplus and had no malfunction. Considering my reliability should be optimal after a few hundred rounds on setting 4, I don't see any problem coming.

Accuracy is acceptable with the MBUS sight. I really like my XCR.

thanks alot, I now have to decide between an xcr and a kel tec rfb... awesome medium to potentially long range bullpup hunting rifle? or cheap to shoot tactical rifle? this is sure to haunt my dreams for the next month...

I changed my XCR from 7.62 to a .223... Had some of those problems in the beginning, ie) breaking in rifle and mags but it's all good now. Keep my 7.62 ammo for my 858.

Looking forward to trying the XCR 6.8 conversion.
