XCR guys, post your groups!

Not really apples-to-apples. The trigger on the XCR is horrendously bad and the barrel is pencil thin even behind the gas block (which can't help when you have an op-rod).

You obviously have no idea what you're talking about. I doubt you've even handled an XCR. All the XCRs in Canada have heavy barrels... They've also started shipping all the new rifles with 'match' triggers and sell the upgraded trigger for the older rifles.

Was living in the US for the last 4 years, so I guess I've only seen the old one. If that's the case, then it doesn't look like its made a tremendous amount of difference...

I guess I was too busy playing with UZIs, AKs, Bobcats, full auto and suppressors to worry about your precious XCR, so pardon me if I'm not an expert on it or on what's come into Canada.

So, this is your heavy barrel is it?

They've apparently added a whopping 6 ounces to the thing. You need stiffer when you have an op-rod kicking if you're after accuracy. The part behind the gas block on that "heavy barrel" is roughly the same diameter as the part in front on the AR barrels below:

That thing certainly isn't match grade either. Will a match tuned XCR ever shoot as good as a match tuned AR? Probably not... but, it isn't giving its full potential with that barrel or trigger. If you can tune a Mini-14 to give sub-MOA, it should at least be capable of that.

Notice how the accuracy guarantee improves with the barrel quality also?

That's a pretty lousy quality picture, but I don't think that's a Canadian XCR, it seems a bit short. The ones we get here are 18.6". However, the widths are likely the same.

I believe that you are absolutely right. An AR will out shoot an XCR most days of the week. The XCR could be better, but until those parts become available for it (not likely anytime soon) we'll have to deal with what we've got. In my opinion it isn't half bad. A far cry from a pencil thin barrel and a horrid trigger.

Thank you for your insight into accurizing the XCR. At this moment it doesn't make a bit of difference though. I think that a stock XCR is still better than a stock Mini 14.

For the record, I have never had a single failure with the rifle's critical systems in over 1000 rounds. Granted, I have had non-essential parts come loose and disappear... (replaced free of charge by Robinson Arms). I have only recently started competing in Service Rifle matches with my XCR, but at least one person competing with an AR (about 80% use the AR platform) has suffered a malfunction during each match.

Its one from the US. I don't know anyone here who has one, so I tapped a buddy down there. Probably took it with his cell...

Not worried about part availability since I have my own tools and a supply of match barrels from the bolt gun that are past their peak, but good enough for experimentation.

Its just a matter of deciding which non-restricted platform lends itself best to accurzation and allows for easy caliber changes between .223 and 7.62 bolt heads. That may mean replacing the upper completely with one made mostly from AR parts and borrowing a few ideas from the OA-93 to get around not having the buffer tube.

Personally I do not see where any accuracy comparisons between an XCR/AR are valid and couldn't care less if an AR platform is more accurate...

I cannot take an AR out into the bush so they are useless to me.

I just came back from a 9 day trip into central BC (Quesnel area) took my XCR in 223 with 10 round LAR mags and had a great time shooting where ever I was camped.

Even had a coyote sneaking into camp one evening...

I was in the camper and my 7 month old dog and 3 year old son were outside playing when I spotted it they are closed to shoot right now so I only shot the rocks beside it and yes I used my XCR... :D

You do know that a gas piston hasn't started it's movement until well after the bullet has left the barrel right?

Now that's just plain funny. After the bullet leave the barrel, pressure drops to zero and there is no way to move the piston. As soon as the bullet passes the gas port, the piston is hit with high pressure and moves. It then hits the bolt carrier which starts moving back. It is the bolt that does not unlock and extract the case until after the bullet leaves the barrel. This relies on the momentum of the bolt carrier. The piston and the bolt carrier are indeed in motion while the bullet is still in the barrel.

Kombayotch, if you think that you have the skill and tools available to manufacture a match quality XCR barrel, I suggest you get on it. I'm sure there are plenty of guys here in Canada that would love to have one.

My contribution:

I was shooting '93 Vintage Czech surplus.
I used the Millet DMS on an Armalite quick release mount.

After I got it zeroed at 100 yards I got this group
93Surp_100.jpg

This is my first group at 150 yards

I wanted to see if the Armalite mount would hold zero, so i took it off and put it back on and tried for a second group at 150 and got this:

And heres what I got out at 200

I was shooting from the bench with my jacket all bunched up as a makeshift sand bag. I was also using the 'bag on the mag' technique I remember reading about here somewhere.

Perple Nerple, I notice you're in Calgary. Where do you go to shoot?

I think you could probably stick to the bag under the handguard instead of under the mag. The XCR is supposed to be free floated, so resting the handguard on a sandbag shouldn't change your POI, and will probably be more stable than shooting off the mag.

In Service Rifle we often shoot off the mag and my groups are definately a little more spread out than shooting off the bench with a bag under the handguard.

You should come out and shoot with us sometime. It would be cool to have another XCR guy out there. Right now I think I'm the only one that shoots the XCR at matches.

Westside real wicked video! I love to picture in picture. How'd you do it? What was the range to the round plate and the plate's diameter? Good shooting!

I use video editing/production software "Cyberlink Powerdirector 8"

Plate is at 200 yards

Plate is 12" diameter
