XCR in .223 or 6.8?

Well I am finally looking at taking the plunge and buying an XCR! Now, just to decide on which caliber to go with. The .223 will allow me to hunt coyotes all year round; but the 6.8 will allow me to take it out for deer :cool:

So what do you guys think; .223 or 6.8? Lets hear your reasons...
 
.223 with a 6.8 upper down the road. you can sell a predator rifle and a deer rifle to offset the costs. or be broke with a bunch of guns like the rest of us :D

oh, get the green one, just incase i wanna borrow it, it needs to match my truck
 
The real question is do you shoot for "fun" or for "work".
If you need a true all-rounder intermediate hunting gun, get the 6.8 SPC XCR-L,
if you "need" a fun cool toy get the 223 Rem XCR-L.

The 6.8 SPC was created because 5.56 NATO just doesn't do the job in combat and it's an excellent intermediate round, much better than 7.62x39 and superior to 6.5x39 (6.5 Grendell) at less than 300m range. It can shoot a very effective and aerodynamically efficient 115gr bullet at 2650fps and is controllable under rapid fire. No other commercial caliber can do this now, not 5.56 NATO/223 Rem, not 7.62x39 and not 7.62 NATO/308 Win.

Finally, I did buy the "fun cool toy" 223 Rem XCR-L and use a 243 Win bolt gun for "real work" !

Get the .223 first and get a 6.8 conversion kit. This will allow you to cover all your bases. I think the .223 would make for more overall fun due to ammo costs, but the 6.8 is better for deer. I assume that the fact that you are considering 6.8 means that you intend to reload for it.

I figure I want the .223 for being able to hunt varmint, while the 6.8 would be good for deer. The 7.62x39 I would not be able to use for varmint (NB Regs), and for deer I would much rather the 6.8.

You can check it using a ballistic calculator, but 6.8 SPC 110 VMAX at 2650fps is a really nice varmint combo since the BC is so high (.370) for a VMAX bullet. On 7.62x39, the only use for this caliber is if you shoot huge amount of ammo and are not afraid of corrosive ammo.

The only problem is that if you want to eventually go ahead and buy the .223 conversion kit, buying the 6.8 first is actually more expensive.

If you take your original 6.8 XCR ($2399) and a .223 conversion kit ($750) you'll end up at a total of $3149.

On the other hand, if you had have originally purchased a .223 XCR ($2299) and a 6.8 conversion kit ($750) you'd end up at a total of $3049.

I've discussed this with Wolverine and they claimed it is coming down from Robarm. Personally I'd love a .223 conversion to go with my 7.62x39, but I can't get past the extra 100$ I'd have to pay compared to someone who went the other way around.

Congrats with the purchase though. It's a wonderful rifle.
 
Well I bought mine is 223 and then got the 7.62x39 as well. Next is the 6.8 for hunting. 223 is my predator/varmit round,7.62x39 is my cheap ammo round for fun at the range, 6.8 will be my hunting caliber for deer. For large game I am keeping my M14 Norc. As a side note my new JR carbine will be my quad and bush gun hopefully with the .45 acp kit soon.
