Im curious as to what moa people are achieving with 7.62X39 bulk surplus ammo at 100, 200 and 300 meters. Thinking of placing a order for a xcr but i am undecided about what caliber to purchase. How difficult and time consuming is it to field strip and clean after bulk surplus use? Any help would be greatly apreciated.

The barrel comes off with with one single hex screw, so cleaning takes no additional effort at all, the barrel is chromed so it won't start to rusting and pitting if you don't get to it immediately. just makesure you keep it well lubed.

accurcy wise with a 7.62X39 it is more than accurate enough to hit a 8" target out to 300m, if you want better than that I would go with 6.8 SPC because I consider 7.62x39 to be a SMG calibre than a rifle calibre.

I wouldnt be telling people that corrosive ammo wont rust or pit a chrome lined barrel. I have read about more than a few people that showed rusting spots on their barrels overnight. One guy said that 16 hours ruined his barrel. A wet climate like the coast of BC will rust a barrel way faster than a dry climate like Arizona as well.

. One guy said that 16 hours ruined his barrel......

Come on J,you should know better than that, taking one guy's one line post without any details as the truth ;)

without knowing what gun he is referring to, 60 year old surplus rifle even if the barrel was chromed, it would had been worned out by now, not to mentioned leaving his rifle sitting around unclean for 16 hours, there is a good chance he doesn't have a good history of taking care of his stuff, the bore was probably bone dry before he started shooting.

I am 1/2 way through a case of corrosive surplus with my XCR, I clean my XCR the same night after a day at the range typically 4-8 hours later, I rinse my barrel in hot running tap water, dry the inside out with tissue paper, apply generous amount of Ed's Red with lanolin before I put it away, so far it is still clean as the day i got it.

ultimately shooting corrosive ammo is not that scary as people make it out to be.

+1

Just wonder over to the Red Rifles forum and read some of the corrosive ammo threads. They are only scary when people don't want to clean their rifles afterward. People should create a habit of cleaning their firearms after a day at the range - corrosive ammo or not.

I am very happy with my XCR 7.62x39 for accuracy shooting surplus ammo. 8"x8" plate at 300 yards is not a problem.

Shooting surplus through the XCR is no problem as far as the corrosive primers are concerned. As mentioned, it is easy to clean, certainly easier than an SKS, and because the receiver is aluminum it isn't bothered by the corrosive ammo.

One thing to be aware of though. The surplus ammo in the blue boxes (2- 10 round stripper clips) is about 2300 fps out of my XCR.

The newer surplus in the plastic packages (mine is marked 1984) is about 2500 fps, which is very hot for 7.62x39. In fact, the primers in this ammo tend to get quite flat, indicating some fairly high pressures. In my XCR I have been getting cases stuck in the chamber, which I have figured out is due to the back of the case expanding and jamming in the chamber. This only happens after I have shot a few dozen rounds and I think is caused by the buildup of carbon in the chamber, to the point where the case gets stuck. The thinking is that this round was designed for rifles with looser tolerances, like the SKS and AK's, so in the XCR you have to keep the chamber cleaner because the tolerances are tighter. I now run a brush into the chamber after a few dozen rounds and that seems to do the trick.
