So I just bought a brand new Robinson arms xcr-l in 7.62x39 with the light weight barrel. I am very impressed with how "cool" this thing is and can't believe it has the non-restricted status it does. My question to you people is, is 7.62x39 an effective calibre for a ranch gun? What is my max range and accuracy? I know this round starts to drop like a stone after about 250y. I feel a little buyers regret by not going .223 for some reason even though I feel the .223 is a neutered round that serves no purpose other than plinking , at least win the x39 I can hunt deer and I even saw pics of a guy who shot a moose with one. If anyone has one of these and wouldn't mind answering my questions I would greatly appreciate it. Also if anyone has a .223 in the central alberta area and wants to try the x39, let me know!

Thanks CGN!

x39 is a much better working calibre vs. 223/556. My x39 XCR was flawless from day 1, only gripe, 30 round mags looks silly but I just bought 10-10 rounders and never looked back.

Only downside I see is ammo availabiliity. Not exactly a calibre known for it's accuracy, so you're not going to fine much to feed it other than surplus or ordering online.

The 7.62x39 may not be known for accuracy, but that more than likely has more to do with the firearms that fire it than the round itself. The XCR's so chambered seem to shoot pretty darn well in the accuracy department.

Thanks for the reply! What would you say the effective range of this calibre and platform are capable of?

I wouldnt hestitate taking a 250 yard shot at anything I wanted to kill ethically. I can hit the 12x12 gong at my range 10/10 times if I do my part. Not much advantage going 6.8 unless you handload or want a bit more range.

7.62x39 is a great utility round like the 30-30 and Canada Ammo have non-corrosive FMJ and SP at surplus pricing. I would highly suggest use it for a few months before you even start consider getting other calibres.

I also have an XCR-L in x39. My only complaint about that calibre is the availability of different magazines. Pretty much stuck with the C-Products mags, whereas 5.56 can use PMags, USGI, AA Beo, PCV Beo, etc, etc.

I do love the hitting power of the x39 bullet over the 5.56 / .223 bullet. It is pretty obvious when you are knocking down steel targets with someone else shooting 223 /556 beside you. x39 sends the steel flying; 556 just knocks them around a bit.

At longer ranges, 223/556 has some advantages over x39... but if I wanted to shoot long range, I'd shoot 308.

I bought the 6.8 SPC first and picked up a 7,62X39 conversion kit for it from the EE. Haven't tried the 7.62 setup yet.
Check out this thread for a review of the 7.62X39 XCR: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/1101486-XCR-10000-round-range-report-**pic-heavy**-and-long-winded

Me too, bought the 6.8spc SS light barrel key mod in the fall to hunt with and I'll be getting the 7.62x39 conversion to plink away with. Great gun to carry around. Love it.
